First I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all of you who responded to the previous newsletter blog. I was touched and overwhelmed at the amount of comments I got on it. My mother's story is clearly a compelling one and I hope someday, when my life has space to do such things, I will be able to write about her in full and really do her justice. But meanwhile several of you wanted to know more so I referred them to the book my foster aunt, Ruth Kluger wrote. It is called Still Alive and although it is my aunt's story, it does include quite a bit about my mother, whom she meets in concentration camp. This is a sparse, intense story: well worth the read. I hope those of you who have an interest will check it out. But this week I wanted to write about the foods we're eating. More and more it is becoming clear how damaging processed carbs are to our bodies. Being full of the "trifecta of evil ingredients" (fat, sugar and salt), processed carbs are creating early diabetes in our kids, obesity in our population as a whole, and early death for many. And because they are highly addictive foods they are really difficult to give up. It is interesting how we are just on the cusp of being able to see that these foods are as damaging as tobacco or alcohol, and perhaps 5 or 10 year down the road there will be lawsuits and warnings on labels, etc. But meanwhile how many of us still need to devour our favorite cookies or chips? How many of us are still eating at fast food or chain restaurants? How many of us are still buying foods at big box stores which carry foods filled with artificial ingredients, preservatives, and the like? Since leaving Weight Watchers over 2 years ago, where it often seemed focused on point values rather than food ingredients and addictive qualities, I have changed my diet quite a bit. I have not brought it up here much because I do not want to dissuade any of you from using the point system, nor do I want to encourage you to eat foods which could increase your weight. But I have discovered that I can keep my weight steady and eat foods I never allowed myself to eat much of before, because I eat practically no processed carbs. READ MORE

SECRET INGREDIENTS...
For many of you these ingredients might not be a secret, but they are some of my little tricks for making food taste delish without the calories, fat, sugar, etc. Dorot Garlic, Basil and Cilantro Frozen Cubes
These little frozen squares of garlic are quite potent. They also make frozen basil squares, cilantro and they do others but I have only found these 3 at Trader Joes.

Better Than Bullion
Those of you who have ever tasted the British Marmite or Vegemite will know what this thick paste is all about. This has a very rich, deep flavor, and comes in chicken, beef and several different vegetarian options. At most markets. In Britain they spread it on bread (gross!) but here we take a teaspoon or so per cup of water. One caveat: this stuff is full of sodium, so if you have issues with salt use sparingly or do not use this, but rather a regular low sodium broth. It also has sugar, so it is not the healthiest of products I usually recommend. However, my view is using one teaspoon in a recipe for 4 servings does not do much damage. Trader Joe's Sundried TomatoesThese are delicious even as a snack. Take them on a picnic or put them in a sandwich.
 Lizano Salsa
Sadly you won't find this thick, savory brown sauce on any grocery shelf. You have to order it. From Costa Rica, this sauce is worth the effort for its sweet, slightly spicy flavor. Use it in soups and stews, or like a steak sauce.
You can find this unique Jamaican sauce at Whole Foods, Olivers and other markets like them. It is made from mango and spices so is sweet and hot.

Especially when it comes to fruits and vegetables, I would SO like to encourage all of you to step out of your "I don't like" box and try something new.
