Hello Readers!

This issue I am typing with one hand. I had a little accident and have an injured wrist. Not fun...but read on...

I wanted to write about injury and set-backs, because getting injured is likely part of the package if you are at all physically active. As much as I wish this were not the case, I know a ton of active folks and I would bet every one of them has had multiple accidents, muscle pulls, strains, etc.

My boo boo happened while biking. Those of you who are bicyclers will understand. I am just learning how to "clip in", embarrassingly enough. If you are unfamiliar with what I mean, this refers to the shoes and bike pedals which clip into each other. This allows the biker to use the "up" motion for power as well pushing "down" on the pedal, so it increases speed and strength. I have ridden for years without doing this, which makes me slower than most, and basically uncool in the serious biking world.

When you learn to clip in there is likely a point when you will fall. I had been warned. You don't have the muscle memory to clip out quickly enough. You are generally stopping or slowing when this happens so your injuries are generally minor. I caught my fall with my hand, hence this wrist business.

LEAN HEALTHY BASICS  

The secret to long term weight loss and management is cooking your own meals, as most of you know. Let me show you easy basics, and throw in secret sauces, spices and other ingredients which make short-cutting easy, yet healthy.

In this class I will start from scratch: chopping the vegetables and other ingredients for all of you to see efficient techniques. I will do the calculations with you to figure out how much we should make. I will make entrees with variations, including discussing vegetarian and vegan options, side dishes and desserts, all using healthy ingredients, specifically aimed at weight loss, as well as being very quick and easy to prepare.
You just watch and then eat! I will serve up a delicious and nutritious meal at the end of the class.

 This 4-hour demonstration will give you a vast quantity of information you can use for life in all your cooking. And you will get all the printed recipes and detailed information to take home as well! This class is ideal for everyone who is a novice or non-cook.

I am teaching at Lomitas Schoolhouse, which has a state-of-the-art kitchen, and is a beautiful light and lovely space.

More inspiration here from a group of amazing bikers, all in their 70s. What is totally cool about this is that this "Race Across America" is generally done by riders in their 30s, and this group matched the time, calorie burn, etc of their younger competitors. As I have been going on about these last few issues, age is NOT a barrier to becoming fit. Read and be impressed...and hopefully motivated!!

CHOCOLATE HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT?

According to Dr Weil, the flavonols in chocolate help us lose weight and it also increases mental capacity. You all know I eat some chocolate every day, and lost all my weight while doing this. The secret is not over-indulging, but allowing yourself some. For me it was about not feeling deprived, but maybe there is some actual physiological reason that it helped me.
