Well it is official. I am now a married woman! My husband is named Denver. We were married last Saturday in our home with close friends and family, and it was a wonderful celebration. A lifetime event like this is so profound, I am still in shock of all it: happy it is over, and overjoyed I have found a very special man to share my life with. This newsletter focuses on weight and health, and I am telling you about my marriage for a specific reason: to talk about how relationships can impact our weight. I know many women will relate to what I write here, but I suspect some of you guys will as well. The very first time I experienced a boy liking me, I lost my appetite and was walking on air. I simply could not eat: did not need to eat. I was overjoyed and anticipating great things. When that boy let me down I wanted to eat everything in the house, and then some.

RECIPES!
Okay, its the holidays and we have had it up to our eyeballs with turkey. What would make a spectacular holiday entree for the family that will be light on our waistlines? How about Cioppino? Shellfish is the leanest protein there is!
And I had to include this clever little appetizer and a link to the site it came from, which has about a dozen equally cute ideas for making lean, yet lovely precursors to the big meal. These are especially great for kids, so check them out!

PAYING EMPLOYEES A LIVING WAGE
If you have been paying attention to the news of late you know there is a big controversy about the minimum wage, and fast food, big box stores. Meanwhile, quietly in the background there are stores like Trader Joes which pay their employees well. Many of you know I am a huge fan of TJs and shop there all the time. This is yet another reason to consider spending your hard earned dollars in their stores. Not only do they make and sell wonderfully delicious and healthy food, they treat their employees with respect. That gets my vote!

BAKING ALTERNATIVES
This article is good, though I would say she leaves off some important alternatives, like applesauce instead of oil, and Xylitol or Zero instead of sugar. She does make a very good point about vegan and gluten free...

SCHOOL LUNCHES
Recently we went to visit our son (my stepson) at his school in Utah. While there we ate lunch with him on 2 separate occasions. Each time the food was canned, or frozen and really terrible, yet they said they are following the national guidelines set up by the first lady. I cannot help wondering if Michelle Obama really knows what is being served to these kids...frightening!

STRAIGHT NO CHASER
Every year for this issue I re-post what I consider to be a classic of Christmas music. Straight No Chaser is an astonishing acapella singing group who do one of the most brilliant, funny and unique pieces I have ever heard. If you have seen it before re-visit this classic, and if this is your first time, you're in for a surprise!

THE COST OF HEALTHY
This article definitely surprised me regarding the difference in cost of eating healthy vs. not. If this information were really widely known I wonder whether if it would make a difference in how people shop and eat. My guess is cost is just an excuse...
