Hello Readers!
Above is a photo of me and my riding buddy Rich Turner at the Gran Fondo two Saturdays ago. This view is the spectacular Hwy 1 rest stop very close to the turn to go up Coleman Valley Rd.
This ride, for those of you not familiar with it, is organized by Levi Leiphiemer, local cyclist extraordinaire, and has 3 different routes:
The Piccolo is the shortest, at 32 miles and 1500+ feet of climbing.
I did the Medio, which is 61+ miles (I did 65, as I rode from my house) and over 4000 ft of climbing.
The Gran is 100+ and 9,000 ft of climbing! (just a note: when I say "climbing" I mean cumulative feet: not a 9000 foot climb all at once).
Using the word "up" seems a bit of an understatement for this part of the Fondo, as this particular stretch is truly a challenge. If you have never been on Coleman Valley Rd take a little drive in your car and as it is cruising vertically and you are pitched back in your seat like an astronaut at take-off, consider thousands of bicyclist churning their way to the top and what that takes. Some people walk part of it (I did not). Many stop multiple times on the way up (I did...probably 4 or 5 times). But all of us on the two longer rides climbed this "hill".

RECIPES!
We had pumpkins mysteriously appear in our garden this year. Wonderfully enough they were sugar pumpkins, so cooking pumpkins. This, of course, has sent me looking for pumpkin recipes. And since this is technically a Halloween Issue it seems an appropriate food to feature. The first recipe I made up for a potluck and it was definitely a hit. The second I found on Skinny Taste's website. I use this site a fair amount for recipes, so check it out! The full recipes for both are on my
Website Recipe Page.

A QUIRKY PROMOTION
This ad campaign for Science World, a BC-based science center, is hilarious, gross, clever and everything in between. I will warn the squeamish or easily offended to perhaps skip this one. But for those of you who enjoy incredibly clever advertising this is a must check out!

WHICH FOODS ARE HIGHEST ON THE LIST TO BUY ORGANICALLY?
I have published lists of produce to buy organic, but here is a very specific list from the Huffington Post which is nice. Sometimes we can be overwhelmed with what we should and shouldn't buy organically. These are the worst offenders.

AGING BACKWARDS
I was moved and fascinated by this beautiful study of faces aging by Czech photographer Jan Langer-Stolet. I loved how the progression was old to young, instead of the other way around. It made me think about what I wrote in the blog above. Find that youthful part of you and bring it to the forefront. | Jan Langer -- Stolet/ The Faces of Time (music by L. PRINGLES, AND OTHER SCARY FOODS
This article gives you the real skinny on how Pringles are made. If you thought potatoes were involved, think again. Well, maybe a little, but overall they are not a healthy food.
I think there are dangers in all foods like this, not only because they potentially have dangerous additives, but because they are developed to addict you. So I appreciated the direction this article went in that regard.
