Hello Readers!

I was talking to an old friend about his father this week: a man I had not seen in several years and wondered how he was doing. My friend said not so well. He said his father, who had been sedentary most of his life, now at 78 could barely walk. He needs a walker to move around and is in constant pain. His body has degenerated and he is miserable and making everyone around him suffer with him.

His father's life is one many will relate to: a sitting job (in this case driving a delivery truck) during the day, and then home to the TV and beer. Upon retirement he sits most of the day, watching TV and doing little or nothing. Now he cannot really move.

Why am I telling you this? Of course you know. We have to do
some sort of physical activity to keep ourselves from this slippery slope. It is possibly too late for my friend's father, although he could do physical therapy and recover some of his strength. However he has a very negative attitude so he is unlikely to take that path. But it is amazing what we can do even in our senior years, if we have the right attitude...and you know that is really what it is all about.

PROCESSED MEATS TOO DANGEROUS FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

I eat an occasional piece of no-nitrates bacon (Trader Joes) now and again but have moved away from all the rest of it...what about you?

PURE FRUIT POPSICLES!
Here is a bonus recipe you can make with your kids or grandkids...Or just for you on a hot summer day!

You can replace the watermelon puree with honeydew melon or cantaloupe puree. Use any fresh organic fruit you have on hand. I like using contrasting colors because it makes the popsicles look so pretty! And don't forget to use seedless watermelon.
...
3 cups watermelon puree (about 1/4 to 1/2 a watermelon)
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
1/2 cup chopped fresh strawberries
1 kiwi, peeled and sliced
1 peach or nectarine, diced small
handful fresh cherries, pitted and chopped

Cut the watermelon into chunks and then puree it in a blender until smooth. Set aside.

Set out about 1 dozen popsicle molds (amount needed will vary depending on size of molds). Fill each one with the chopped fresh fruit. Then pour in the watermelon puree until each mold is full to the top. Place a popsicle stick into each one. Place into your freezer and freeze for about 6 to 8 hours

GORGEOUS NATURE

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT HEALTH, NOT WEIGHT
At one point in my life I had a 9 year old foster daughter who had a very slight weight issue. How I wish I had read this article when I had her because I made her self-conscious about her body when it was not necessary. This is wise stuff....

WATERMELON CAKE ANYONE?

The concept is awesome, but I suspect the outer ingredients cancel out the inner healthy one. Still, what a great idea!

  LET'S GET MOVING!

Dancing, Zumba, Biking, Hiking, Tennis, Basketball, there are a zillion ways to get the blood flowing. This week I am asking all of you who are regular exercisers to send me the specifics of what you do...where, when, how much it costs and how often you do it. I would like to make a great list for the next issue: a kind of "best of" from you all...SO PLEASE SEND ME THE INFORMATION!!

Thank you all!

More Thoughts on Fruit...

I guess this is a fruit issue because almost everything that came into the inbox this week was fruit-related.

I loved this article on why we don't gain weight from eating fruit, despite the sugar.
