Will You Be Your Own Valentine?

It has been said that
if you don't love yourself first,
you won't be able to find love for others.

But what does that actually mean . . .
to love yourself first?

And isn't there an implication that by doing so,
we are being "selfish"?

The answer is no, we are not being selfish.
We are being self-active.

Actively taking time to love our selves, our bodies, our thoughts, our health, our abilities, our choices
is critical to how we live our lives and
how we treat those in our lives that we love.

One of the best ways to Be Your Own Valentine (and really, your own best friend
every other month of the year),
is to Honor Your Health With Love

Here are some ways to actively love yourself:

LIFESTYLE  ~

1). Begin your day with love, not technology.
Before getting out of bed,
remind yourself of your value.
Put one hand on your stomach
(your center of confidence)
and the other on your heart
(your center of love).
Breathe in love and breathe out love.

2). Take time to mediate and journal.
Spend time focusing inward daily.
Begin with 5 minutes of meditation and
5 minutes of journaling each morning.
Gradually increase this time.

3). Talk yourself happy.
Use affirmations to train your mind
to become more positive.
When you catch yourself criticizing, stop
and replace that thought with
a positive and loving message instead.

4). Do what honors and respects you.
Don't participate in activities that bring you down. Don't allow toxic people in your life.
Be open to love, but be discerning
on who and what you allow into your life.

5). Be patient with yourself.
Let go of fear.
Let go of worrying about the judgments of others. Trust in yourself, relax and allow for change.
Remember that loving yourself is a choice.

FOOD  ~

1). Boost your veggie intake.
Vegetables are filled with nourishing
vitamins and minerals that
provide strength and support to our body.
Plant foods have an uplifting energy which allows us to feel lighter, and be open and loving.
Include lots of dark leafy green varieties
in your salads and smoothies.

2). Drink more water.
In addition to adding hydration to keep us
from feeling grumpy and lethargic,
water is very cleansing.
Cleansing our organs is both physically
and spiritually beneficial.

3). Focus less on calories and more on quality.
Quality food means whole foods that come from nature (sunshine, Vitamin D, nutrient-dense soil).
Calories are restrictive and not always the best guide to long-term health.
To quote Michael Pollan,
"If it came from a plant, eat it;
if it was made in a plant, don't."

4). Eat with an attitude of gratitude.
Be thankful for the food you eat.
Put your fork down between bites to
experience the flavors.
Imagine that the nutrients are feeding and nourishing every cell in your body to give you vitality and strength throughout your day.

5). Honor your body as a sacred vessel.
Every time you take a bite,
you are either feeding your health
or feeding your illness.
Choose to feed your health in a loving, compassionate way where colorful, live, dynamic foods are the staple of your approach - unprocessed, fresh foods filled with enzymes, minerals, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants.
