Nutritional Buzzwords:
what do they mean?
Antioxidants are a broad group
of compounds that destroy single oxygen molecules (aka: Free Radicals) in the body, thereby protecting against oxidative damage to cells.
They are essential to good health and are found naturally in a wide variety of plant foods including berries, fruits and vegetables.
Bioflavonoids are a large class of antioxidants abundant in the pulp and rinds of citrus fruits and other vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, kiwi fruit and strawberries.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids reduce the risk
of heart disease by checking the tendency of blood to clot, discouraging the build up of plaque in blood vessels and lowering the level of blood-thickening lipids called triglycerides. They also ease the pain for some sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis and may impede
the development of breasts tumors.
The best source of omega-3 Fatty Acids
are found in flaxseeds.
They are rich as well in linolenic acid and
plant estrogens called lignans which have anticancer benefits.
