HELP EDUCATE CONGRESS

Join HCAOA Legislative Fly-in Day, May 16th

Get involved! Make your voice heard for our industry and let your congressional representatives and senators know how Health Care Reform legislation, PPACA is going to impact your businesses, employees and clients. A great way to do that is to participate in the Home Care Association of America's (HCAOA) Legislative Fly-in Day in Washington DC on May 16. HCAOA members will be addressing Congress on PPACA and other legislative matters that negatively impact our industry that day. If you cannot come in person, email congress with your concerns on May 16 while the HCAOA is there. Whether in person or in writing, your participation is crucial. Click here to access an invitation to the Fly-in with more details. For questions contact Tim Purcey at Tim.Purcey@ComfortKeepers.com.

THANKS FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION

Internal Communications Survey

Thanks to all of you who took the time to complete the Communications Survey. We had over 100 respondents and quite a number of folks who indicated they would be willing to participate in a focus group on the topic of improving internal communications. The focus group will happen in May and we are looking forward to even richer information that will allow us to formulate a strategy that improves communication flow. Watch for updates on "next steps."

CKFI CUSTOM ASSESSMENTS

Help Improve Your Hiring Quality

After an extensive screening process, in October of 2012 CKFI announced a new partnership with Accord Management Systems to provide a Caregiver (Five-Star) and Staff (McQuaig) assessment tool for Comfort Keepers® franchisees. (Each assessment is available in multiple languages.)

In January, we began the process of creating custom assessments for the positions of Scheduler, Outside Sales, Recruiter, Client Care and General Manager. We are excited to announce the availability of the new Scheduler custom assessment and will continue to work with franchise owners and high performing employees in each of the other positions to create the remainder of the custom assessments in 2013. Watch Friday Flash for future updates.

To utilize these assessments in your hiring process, please contact Accord Management Systems at (800) 466-0105, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, PST. Unlimited use of the Five-Star Caregiver assessment and McQuaig staff assessment is only $250 a year -- no contract required.

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION

New I-9 Forms Must Be Updated by May 7th

On March 7, 2013, the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the release of a revised Form I-9, the Employment Eligibility Verification. Employers are required to use this form to verify the identity and employment eligibility of each individual they hire. The revisions to the I-9 include - for the most part - formatting changes, clarification of instructions, and the inclusion of additional data fields.

The revised I-9 was available for use beginning on March 8th, and employers must begin using the revised form immediately. However, the USCIS acknowledged the difficulty employers face in transitioning immediately to the new form and, accordingly, provided a sixty (60) day grace period to phase in use of the revised form. As such, employers have up to and including May 7, 2013 to update their business processes as necessary to accommodate the new form. After this date, employers who fail to use the revised I-9 may be subject to applicable penalties and fines.

Finally, please note that the revised form must be used for all new hires and re-verifications only. Employers do not need to complete the form for current employees for whom a properly completed I-9 is already on file.

Employers may access the new I-9 online by visiting the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov.
