YouthZone: 1976 - 1979

In 1976, Steve Jobs was busy launching his new company, Apple Computers.  While the United States was celebrating its bicentennial, teenagers throughout the country were kicking back to the tunes of Bay City Rollers, Paul Simon and Elton John.  Sylvester Stallone was making box office news with his smash hit Rocky.  While it seems that 1976 might have been a lighter and easier time in our history, the truth is drugs were increasingly taking their hold on American high school students - even on the Western Slope of Colorado in a small town called Rifle.  And thus, YouthZone was born.
 
Many would be surprised to know that the initial birth of YouthZone was the result of local kids who recognized a strong need for resources in the community.  Seeing many of their peers become increasingly involved with marijuana and other drugs, the children of Charlene and Bob Collett came to their parents, asking what they could do.
