  November 2013
'Tis the month to be thankful.  Well, I'm thankful every day, but this is the month when we have a holiday that features the word "Thank."

We had incredibly beautiful fall colors this year for which to be thankful.  I never cease to be amazed by the transformation and beauty of leaves before they fall from the tree or the wind hastens their journey to the ground.

The fall season is beautiful, but it also has its health challenges as well.  The fall is represented by the Lung in Chinese Medicine, and sinus and lung issues are a frequent concern seen in my clinical practice.  Thyme for a Steam is one of my top recommendations for self care this time of year.

In the spirit of thankfulness and gratitude, I'm sharing a poem and prayer that always bring a smile to my face.

Thyme for a Steam

Congested noses and sinuses are rampant this time of year.  Fortunately, a little stove top medicine in the form of an herbal steam can ease the congestion and prevent a sinus infection.

Herbal steams are a great way to deliver the medicine and power of herbs to right where you need it:  your nose, sinuses and lungs.

Thyme is my go-to herb of choice for an  herbal steam for sinus congestion (and pink eye).

Fill a pot 3/4 full of water and bring the water to a boil.  Turn off the heat, toss in a handful of thyme (fresh or dried), cover the pot with a lid and let steep 10-15 minutes.  Cover your head with a light kitchen towel, position your face over the pot (not too close - you don't want to burn yourself), and then remove the lid and inhale the thyme vapors for 5-10 minutes.
Ok to use on a daily basis.

Please note: Coughs are more complicated than sinus congestion, so if you have a cough you'll want to come in for a custom herbal blend to resolve the cough.

Words of Gratitude

A poem by Melody Beattie:

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order,
confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home,
a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today
and creates a vision for tomorrow.

This Thanksgiving prayer was given to me by my dear friend Jake.

A prayer of Thanksgiving by Max Coots

Let us give thanks. . .

For generous friends. . .with hearts as big as hubbards

and smiles as bright as their blossoms;

For feisty friends as tart as apples;

For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers,
keep reminding us we had them;

For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;

For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and as elegant as a row of corn - and the others - as plain as potatoes, and so good for you.

For funny friends, who are as silly as brussels sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem artichokes, and serious friends as complex as cauliflowers and as intricate as onions;

For friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as dill, as endless as zucchini, and who - like parsnips - can be counted on to see you through the long winter;

For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening-time, and young friends coming on as fast as radishes;

For loving friends, who wind around as like tendrils, and hold us despite our blights, wilts, and witherings;

And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past, that have been harvested - but who fed us in their times that we might have life thereafter;

For all these we give thanks.

Amen.

Aethereo Essential Oils and H2EO Diffusers
by Plant Extracts International

Many of you have experienced the pleasure of a cotton ball graced with a few drops of a lovely essential oil during your acupuncture sessions with me.  The cotton balls continue to give pleasure while they reside in your car or purse.

Field of Tea Tree
There's no denying the power of scent as Helen Keller so eloquently puts it:

"Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived."

I've enjoyed the purity and potency of the Aethereo essential oils in clinic and at home for the past few years, but they do not sell their oils at retail locations.   I had been sending folks out to their office in Hopkins to purchase their oils and diffusers, but now you'll have the convenience of purchasing their oils and diffusers from my office.

I use the H2EO diffuser by my desk to keep me healthy all year long.  On my office days I'll use a few of the cerebral stimulants such as peppermint and rosemary to keep me on task.  On days that I see patients, I'll use one of their Melablends to protect me from the various colds and flu that seem to be more prevalent this time of year.

One of the benefits of the H2EO diffuser is that they take advantage of ultrasound to deliver the scent:
"[H2EO AirCare Diffusers] harness the science of ultrasound to deliver micron-sized essential oil droplets so fine that within a moment of leaving the diffuser, the cool mist becomes a vapor, incorporated into the atmosphere and spreading evenly throughout your room."
Another benefit is that you don't have to use large amounts of essential oils.  Five drops of essential oil will scent a room for the duration of the work day.  The H2EO diffuser does not use heat, so the essential oils are not damaged during diffusion.

I also use the Aethereo essential oils in my Bee Balm Botanicals product line.  Their lavender and lemon myrtle are featured in my Sunshine Soap.
