Graduate Studies Forum 2014

Over 70 Nurse Educators from across Canada met in Ottawa on November 17th at the annual CASN Graduate Studies Forum to discuss topics specific to nursing graduate education! The three areas of exploration for the day included:

1) Master's Education - Defining Advanced Practice: Dr. Karen Spalding, Associate Professor, from the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing at Ryerson University, gave a presentation on the development of a CASN position paper on Advanced Practice in Masters Nursing Education. Participants also explored the question of what is considered practice in master's education through small and large group discussion.

2) Nurse Practitioner Education for Prescribing Controlled Drugs and Substances: Dr. Ruth Martin-Misener, Associate Professor at Dalhousie University School of Nursing, presented on the changing scope of practice for Nurse Practitioners in Canada. Consultation from attendees was sought on a draft set of competencies for NP Education related to prescribing controlled drugs and substances.

3) Doctoral Nursing Education: To end the day, Dr. Marilyn Macdonald, Associate Professor, Associate Director Graduate Studies, Dalhousie University School of Nursing, led small group work on guiding principles and essential components for doctoral nursing education. Finalizing these guiding principles and essential components will be the last step in completing the National Nursing Education Framework!

CASN would like to thank everyone for their participation at this year's Graduate Studies Forum, and we look forward to seeing you next year!
