Some more Med-e-Tel 2013 conference program updates
Check out the latest Med-e-Tel 2013 conference program updates at www.medetel.eu. In two morning plenary sessions on the first (April 10th) and second day (April 11th) of the conference, experts and thought leaders from around the world will provide a global update on telemedicine and eHealth and a look at telemedicine and eHealth from doctors' perspective, nurses' perspective, and various industry perspectives (incl. representatives from pharma, telecom and medical companies). The first day of the conference will also feature "Women and eHealth", scheduled for the entire afternoon of Wednesday April 10th. It will highlight the crucial role of women in telemedicine and eHealth and their unrecognized capacity as builders of alternative futures, based on characteristics such as an innate future orientation, capacity to mediate and to network at all levels, capacity to be social actors, to face natural catastrophes and human conflicts by creating solidarity among women. The session, in collaboration with the Millennia2015 Foundation and supported by Sanofi, Connecting Nurses and Klughammer, will cover two broad perspectives of women in eHealth and telemedicine: their place and roles in this arena; and highlights of local and global initiatives in which women are fully involved. "We will again have stimulating content at Med-e-Tel, to bring the best of original research, reviews, hot off-the press findings, as well as practical, hands-on experiences (lessons from the field) - a priceless feature that the top journals in the world, such as the WHO Bulletin, have also incorporated," says Prof. Yunkap Kwankam, Executive Director of the International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth, organizer of Med-e-Tel. "The International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth is all about facilitating the dissemination of experience and practices gained in solving Telemedicine and eHealth challenges around the globe. Med-e-Tel is one of the primary instruments that help us to realize this mission, and we're very pleased to be back in Luxembourg for the 11th edition of this event" concludes Kwankam. RECAP: innovative solutions for chronic diseases
The RECAP (Regional Care Portals) project is a European INTERREG project with partners from Belgium, The Netherlands and UK. It focuses on innovative solutions for chronic diseases and aims at boosting innovation and employment by strengthened cooperation at international level. In view of the scale and the urgency, RECAP focuses specifically on patients with chronic heart failure problems, one of the main causes of death in Western Europe. By focusing on a specific target group, the quality of the solutions is improved, services can be more easily delivered to new patient groups and integration in the transnational portal is facilitated. RECAP regards the growing demand for telehealth as an opportunity to get innovative solutions, such as services to diagnose, treat and monitor from a distance, to the market. The telehealth sector in the partner regions comprises 145 companies employing some 115,000 people. RECAP aims to:
- promote business development by promoting the application of telehealth equipment and its market development;
- create new European or international collaboration clusters and models for coordination and collaboration;
- develop decision-making structures to be able to apply remote diagnosis and treatment effectively;
- develop the structure and architecture of an transnational integrated care model with the use of a transnational health portal.
The research and testing of innovations will take place in regional hubs, each of which will focus on one aspect where the necessary experience has already been gained. Linking the existing knowledge in the hubs and translating knowledge into building blocks that can be used to establish a Transnational Health Innovation Portal is the main result of RECAP. It is essential to scale up the existing regional portals to a transnational level to be able to continue to facilitate the growing need. Only through clustering strengths can a high level of care be guaranteed in the future. Meet RECAP partners in the Med-e-Tel 2013 expo and assess opportunities to expand your transnational collaboration.

Improving clinical pathways in a cost-efficient manner
Finnish telemedicine solution provider RemoteA offers easy-to-use, cost-efficient solutions for simplifying the diagnosis of a number of common medical disorders, such as sleep apnea, cardiac arrhythmia, and hypertension. The RemoteA telemedicine system eliminates the barriers dividing primary and specialist care and is already helping hundreds of health care professionals on a daily basis. Thanks to the growing range of diagnostic tools being developed as part of the RemoteA telemedicine system, attending physicians now have a practical and affordable means for diagnosing the health of their patients more easily and more extensively than ever before. The system eliminates the need to refer patients to specialists in many cases and makes the expertise of specialists available when needed in a very cost-efficient way for primary care units. The RemoteA telemedicine system consists of easy-to-use devices, a secure communication system linking professionals in the field and at hospitals, and sophisticated browser-based analysis software. The system has been designed from the start with user-friendliness, fail-safe operations, and scalability in mind - and means that it is just as easy to introduce it for a network of a handful of physicians and specialists as it is for a hospital district or dozens of clinics nationwide. The RemoteA telemedicine system already serves close to 200 clinics, health centres, and occupational health care facilities in Finland, Sweden, the UK and Portugal. So far, no less than 50,000 specialist consultation reports have been delivered to patients and GPs and more than 1,300 patients are diagnosed monthly. Find out more from RemoteA in the Med-e-Tel 2013 expo. Also hear about the cost of a traditional clinical pathway of an arrhythmia patient compared to a modified pathway where an online consultation service is in use at a primary care facility, presented by Tuomas Harju in the Med-e-Tel 2013 conference program.

eHealth patient-centered solutions: new opportunities and strategies in the pharmaceutical industry
Pharmaceutical companies, but also other traditional pharma players such as pharmacies (see for instance netCare: pharmacies as a useful addition to basic healthcare), evolve towards more comprehensive healthcare partnerships. eHealth solutions will play an increasingly important role to enhance stakeholder engagement and patient outcomes. This evolution will require a more intimate appreciation of patient needs, care pathways and technology enablers. Hear from Eddie Chan, Associate Vice President & Global Head of Customer Solutions & Innovation at Sanofi, how his company has developed and prototype-tested a number of eHealth solutions. His presentation will be part of the Med-e-Tel opening session on Wendesday April 10th. Sanofi, together with Connecting Nurses, is also actively supporting the afternoon session on Wednesday April 10th at Med-e-Tel on "Roles and Empowerment of Women in eHealth and Telemedicine", and will be showing their solutions in the Med-e-Tel expo.

The need for a clearer European vision for telehealth
The European Commission eHealth Action Plan for 2012 to 2020 provides a focus for telehealth and stimulates a debate on the role of telehealth services in helping meet changing health and well-being needs. In a presentation at Med-e-Tel 2013, Malcolm Fisk, Co-Director of the Age Research Centre at Coventry University (UK), and coordinator of the European TeleSCoPE project, will point to the need for a wider understanding (and definition) of telehealth and to the way that the European Code of Practice for Telehealth Services (developed within the European Commission funded TeleSCoPE project) is poised to make its mark - influencing the shape of telehealth services; providing an essential quality benchmark; safeguarding users and helping to give clarity to the European vision. Malcolm Fisk's presentation is now scheduled in the plenary opening session on Thursday April 11th at Med-e-Tel. Also attend the launch session of the new beta-version of the Code of Practice in the afternoon of Thursday April 11th at 16h00 to find out more about this Code, whom it is for, and what it is meant to achieve!
