Strategies for Healthy Minds and Healthy Brains

-- be in your right mind as you age

Greetings!

July's  Pacific Naturopathic newsletter explores the issue of maintaining brain health and mental functioning as you age. In her musings, Dr. Connie offers a perspective on identifying less with mind and more with Self. In her article, she outlines strategies for keeping the brain healthy, and restoring and safeguarding memory. Dr. Marcel emphasizes the role of nutrients in brain health, and discusses relevant I.V. therapies.

Dr. Corrine discusses the importance of the mind in overall health. And Jane Hernandez writes about learning, through hypnotherapy and Emotional Freedom Technique, to behave with conscious intent, rather than being subject to subconscious whims. Dr. Vivek gives us an update on the his busy conference schedule and offers several opportunities to experience the wonder of Ayurvedic Medicine.

Be Well!

Memories, Dreams and Reflections

As we age, the young person's desire to live long is most often replaced with the older person's desire to live healthy. So many of us have had the experience of losing family or friends to senile dementia and/or Alzheimer's Disease. We inevitably have become aware that a most important aspect of living healthy is aging with our minds intact. In my article below, I talk about some of the things we can do to protect memory and mental functioning. In these musings, however, I'd like to write about other aspects of mental health.

With Alzheimers, there comes the point where family can no longer care for their loved one. Thus, my mother spent her last 18 months or so in a care facility. The care facility was the only care facility in the small town where I grew up. There were therefore, in addition to my mother, other residents in the facility that I had known in my younger years.

The interesting thing was that, some 40 or 50 years later in life than the time I had first encountered these people, though their minds were gone, their personalities were pretty much intact. My mother eventually lost her ability to speak, but remained kind and gracious to the end, and was beloved by the staff. One of her old time friends, more than a bit of a pill in her early years, was hilariously imperious as she presided over the dining hall.

We are who we are. We do tend, however, to lose our filters. Issues that have been repressed or unresolved resurface unpredictably and in exaggerated ways.  Keeping this in mind, it behooves us to keep working to evolve into more conscious ways of being while we're still able.

The yogis teach that environment is stronger than will. While it is often said that it takes a community to raise a child, I say it takes a community to transition an elder. We uprooted my then 97 year old father-in-law from his home of many years, and placed him with a small spiritually uplifted and serviceful community of caring friends of all ages. After a predictably difficult reorientation, we found that his mental health improved in all ways. As we age, more than ever, we need to be involved with family, friends, and community. In the best of all worlds, our involvement is a natural progression in the context of long term commitment to such a community.

It also helps immeasurably to start identifying ourselves with the inner unchanging aspect of our being, and to learn to connect into our timeless and peaceful center. We may lose our minds, but we can never lose the essence of who it is that we are at our very core. Living in that reality eases all transitions of body and mind.

You Can Keep Your Mind Young

 * * *

Do you feel like age is catching up with you? Have you noticed wrinkles, hair loss, reduced physical energy, or diminished sex drive? Do you get you struggle to remember names of people you know?

                  Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

One of the latest approaches to health is an array of therapies that falls under the classification of "Anti-Aging Medicine." The definition is easy - it means the process of slowing down or reversing the aging process to extend life beyond the average lifespan, AND to live in a healthy body as we age.

Indeed, the sale of anti-aging nutrition products, physical fitness memberships in gyms, anti-wrinkling agents, hormone replacements and vitamins, supplements and herbs is a lucrative global industry.  Also, there has arisen a whole new breed of doctor who utilizes evidence-based approaches for the detection, prevention, treatment and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders and diseases.  The anti-aging doctor offers protocols to maintaining sound mental function throughout one's life, regardless of genetic predispositions.

Naturopaths have practiced anti-aging medicine for decades.  Safely balancing body chemistry to restore health and increase vitality has long been our stock in trade.  It is what we do and have always done.  And to this day, there is not another profession that has more experience in the anti-aging field than naturopathic doctors. We have always been cutting edge.  To this extent, the big thing for us at Pacific Naturopathic in the field of anti-aging medicine has been the addition of intravenous (IV) nutritional therapy to our list of offerings. This is powerful, safe and highly effective medicine.

Intravenous therapies involve administering nutrients directly into the bloodstream. This extremely safe and exceptionally powerful delivery system circumvents the chaos of the GI tract and the poor absorption qualities of some orally administered nutrients. For example, a Myers Cocktail, which is extremely safe and tolerated by almost everyone, addresses several deficiencies of an aging metabolism with its focus on B-vitamin and Vitamin C.

Even if you eat well, your body might not be absorbing the vitamins and minerals it needs to fight the aging process.  IV therapy boosts the antioxidant vitamin and mineral levels in your body much more effectively than oral supplements.

Intravenous alpha-lipoic acid easily passes into the brain, providing protective effects on both brain and nerve tissue. Research indicate that it preventive both preventive and treatment benefits for stroke and other brain disorders involving free radical damage. This therapy is also available at Pacific Naturopathic.

If you would like to discuss the feasibility of intravenous therapy as part of your anti-aging protocol, I'd be delighted to chat with you.  Please phone 650-917-1121 to schedule a short phone consult, free of charge.

Intravenous Nutritional Protocols

at Pacific Naturopathic

 * * *

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.

* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.

* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.

* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.

* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.

* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.

To name a few:

            IV Glutathione

            IV Alpha Lipoic Acid

            IV Vit C

            Amino Acid infusions

            Vitamin and Mineral drips

            Myers' Cocktail

Other Protocols for Energy and Immune System Function

We have a dedicated Infusion room that is relaxing and peaceful for all these therapies.

Dr. Marcel Hernandez has been trained in IV therapeutic protocols and will be offering treatments for those patients for whom treatments are appropriate and safe.

Phone now to get on the list for treatment consideration.  650-917-1121.  An initial 30-minute consultation and current blood test is required for existing patients.  A 90-minute first office call and blood test is required for new patients.  Space is limited to four people receiving treatments a day.

How You Can Protect

and Enhance Brain Function

* * *

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

Before my very smart father suffered the first of the two strokes which eventually took his life, he started suffering from some loss of cognition. I remember his humiliation at misplacing his cards in the middle of a card game, finding them again in his shirt pocket and not remembering how to proceed from there. My sadness at his plight motivated me to place him on an extensive protocol to support his mental functioning. I'm happy to say that my father went back to beating me at cards. Simple considerations and minimal interventions can sometimes have profound results.

A first step in enhancing brain health is evaluation of excesses and deficiencies in the diet. The polypharmacy that people intake in order to treat other ills often impairs mental functioning. Additional problems are dietary indiscretions (living on sugar and bad fats) and nutritional deficiencies brought on by inability to procure or prepare foods, lack of caloric intake, difficulties chewing, maldigestion or malabsorption

As the consumption of fresh colored fruits and vegetables and herbs and spices diminishes, bioflavonoids become deficient. Bioflavonoids strengthen and normalize tissue through antioxidant and tissue specific functions. Blueberries and turmeric are two good sources of bioflavonoids. Blueberry concentrates have been shown to enhance brain function and reverse neuronal aging. The bioflavonoids found in turmeric are anti inflammatory and inhibit the formation of the amyloid proteins that are causative suspects in Alzheimer's. Click here for a delicious way to enjoy turmeric.

With regards to vitamins and minerals, Vitamin B12 and folic acid are two of the most common deficiencies in older people. These vitamins impact energy, mood and mental functioning. Together with B6, they quell the brain damaging inflammation that high levels of homocysteine represent.  The mineral lithium, as a nutritional supplement, protects the brain in the event of injury and also promotes the regeneration of brain cells. Even most simple antioxidant formulas are protective of the brain.

Elders (and young people, too!!) are also often deficient in essential fatty acids and other beneficial fats. EPA and DHA, the active constituents of omega 3 fatty acids (as in fish oil), are fundamental to brain health.  Coconut oil provides medium chain fatty acids, which, if we are to believe any of the many YouTube videos, can be a dramatic aid in senile dementia, Alzheimers and other brain dysfunction. Click here for a YouTube video.

Other nutrients, such as phosphatidyl choline, are used to stabilize membranes in the nervous system and throughout the body.  In our clinic, we have successfully used a specialized form of choline called glycerophosphocholine to repair damage from anaesthesia and concussion. Clinical trials show it to be useful in enhancing mental focus and higher cognitive functions. A related nutrient, phosphatidyl serine, enhances memory when high cortisol (brought on by high stress) has been an issue. Phos Serine is used to repair the damage done to the hippocampal area of the brain by the high cortisol and to balance the cortisol levels.

Hormonal balance is important to brain health, especially as we age. A young prematurely menopausal patient of mine had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. She rallied somewhat and was stable for several years after we provided her with age appropriate hormones through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. The hormone pregnenalone is a precursor hormone to all the sex steroid hormones, and is used to promote brain function. It is neuroprotective and helps store memory and prevent memory loss.

There are a host of helpful botanical options, prescribed according to the problem. Gingko biloba increases circulation to the brain, enhancing oxygen and nutrient supplies. Anti anxiety herbs promote memory by bringing calmness. Adrenal herbs help mitigate the role of stress in promoting memory loss. Other botanicals operate on the pathways affected by the popular Alzheimers medications, but without the expense of those medications and without the side effects.

As time goes by and as our population ages, we are quickly learning more about the nutrients, botanicals and hormones that can be used to better brain health and to protect and even restore memory. Two points to remember are that brain health is very clearly influenced by what we do and do not put in our mouths, whether food or medicinal. And, though these paragraphs focused on nutrients and other medicinals, I would be remiss not to mention that brain health is profoundly influenced by exercise. So if you've been sitting at your computer for hours now, perusing emails, googling this and that, just get up right now and take a fast walk around the block! Your brain will thank you.

De-Stressing Your Mind
as Part of Your Health Program

corrine 2

The mind is a mighty force that can easily enhance or diminish our physical health. Up to 80% of all illnesses are related to chronic stress, and stress these days is mostly due to mental-emotional or social factors. Because of this, taking care of our mental and emotional health is very important for our physical health and overall wellbeing.

Mind-body medicine looks at the link between mind and body and teaches people different techniques for self-care and self-awareness. These techniques include things like meditation, tai chi, yoga, guided imagery, biofeedback, and even using drawings to express thoughts and feelings. Decreasing our stress through mind-body medicine techniques can help us have more control over our mental and emotional health, which can greatly enhance our quality of life. On top of this, finding other things such as exercise, taking baths, and receiving massage or other kinds of bodywork can help as well to greatly reduce stress and anxiety from day to day life.

I have recently had a number of women coming to me with multiple, ongoing, chronic health issues. One woman is a cancer survivor on top of having heart issues, joint pain, bladder problems, and allergies. Another woman has been struggling with debilitating depression most of her life along with digestive issues and problems with balance. Both are under considerable mental-emotional stress as well as physical stress from their chronic health conditions, so they came to me for bodywork. Both women benefited greatly from the gentle touch of craniosacral therapy with reiki, and they felt much more balanced, relaxed, and rejuvenated from the sessions. They continue to see me for adjunctive treatment along with their conventional medical treatments.

Craniosacral therapy and reiki are both great therapies for stress reduction, relieving anxiety, decreasing chronic pain, and helping to put the body into a healing and restorative state. Along with mind-body medicine techniques, extra bodywork can often be very beneficial for decreasing chronic stress and balancing health.

  The Programmed Mind

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

Jane 2013

Here's the thing about the mind that is so amazing - we've got two of them.

We live in our conscious mind and use it to analyze and solve problems. At any given moment it can evaluate a given situation and we need it to help us make decisions in our everyday lives. But it accounts for only about 10% of the mind. The real power player is the subconscious mind which accounts for the other 90%.

The subconscious mind takes in everything and stores it in your mind computer. It runs all the automatic functions of the body (breathing, heart function, organs, muscles, etc.). The subconscious is also the place where you store emotions and core beliefs. It is programmed through life experience and runs a major part of what we believe and how we behave. Then the question arises about who's the boss? Who/what is determining how we behave, evolve and change?

We have every possibility to be the boss of ourselves and the path to that is through the 90% part - the subconscious. The choice is about taking control and reprogramming what it is we want to change. Fortunately there are several tools to do that now that have been scientifically evaluated and time-tested.

Hypnotherapy allows us to access our subconscious and challenge the limiting beliefs that we have formed about ourselves. Then we also have the capacity to replace these beliefs with healthy ones which free us to reach our goals. As we proceed with this therapy we can use EFT (Tapping) to keep our energy open and flowing. EFT is a miracle tool that one can easily learn and use at will. In a stressful situation it will bring down the anxious reactions and calm the mind.

Trying Hypnotherapy and EFT can open up locked places and free the mind - both of them.

2 teaspoons "better than bouillon"

water

2 tablespoons coconut oil

  2. Add lime juice, two cans of diced tomatoes and "better than bouillon" (do not use is using vegetable stock as liquid).
  3. Sauté onions and peppers in coconut oil until the onions are soft and semi-transparent.  Add garlic and sauté another two minutes, stirring every 15 seconds or so.  Add turmeric, curry powder, sherry and salt and mix well. Add onion/garlic mixture to mung bean pot.

Inflammatory Changes in the Breasts

Normal thermog photo
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

Just as inflammation damages the brain, inflammation damages tissues throughout the body. With breast thermography, inflammatory changes in the breasts are apparent when we see areas of increased temperature.  Whereas, without further testing, we cannot differentiate between simple inflammation and abnormal cell development, we can repeat the breast thermogram after treatment to discover whether a particular anti-inflammatory regime has worked or not. We find that three months is an adequate amount of time for positive change to occur.

The same parameters apply to reducing inflammation in the breasts as were mentioned in the article above on reducing inflammation in the brain and promoting brain health. We often see serious dietary change alone result in decreased thermal risk ratings. Exercise enhances favorable estrogen metabolism, further decreasing both thermal risk ratings and hormonal exposure to sensitive breast tissue. An initial breast thermogram and a follow up three months later will prove the efficacy of the diet and exercise regime.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

Intravenous Nutritional Therapy

iv photoThis is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.

Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy.  If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.

Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs.  Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.

We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort.  You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.

At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments.  If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.

Boston Heart Diagnostics has offered Pacific Naturopathic doctors an amazing deal on their Cardiac Risk Assessment blood test, at no out-of pocket cost to you!

Yes, what you read is true.  Standard blood lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL) are not predictive of cardiovascular disease. The test we are offering includes proprietary advanced risk tests, and a comprehensive offering of lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, cardiometabolic, liver, kidney and genetic tests -- four pages of test results, plus a 54-page narrative discussing your results. And best of all, except for a $35 administrative fee,  there is no cost to you! How is this possible? What's the catch?  Click here to read about this extraordinary test.

Note:  You must be an established patient at Pacific Naturopathic and have health insurance for this special program. You must also have a diagnosable condition, like high cholesterol, cardiac abnormalities or a strong family history of heart disease for us to be able to order this test. Other low-cost options are available for those who do not have insurance. Unfortunately, we are unable to order this test for Medicare patients. The government does not yet allow naturopathic doctors to bill Medicare. A 60-minute return office call is required to discuss your results. The cost of the return office call is $180.

We are delighted to have found a far infrared sauna at a price most of us can afford.

Dr. Connie enjoys the sauna between patients

We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat.  They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.

We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax.  Shipping is free!

Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost.  Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.

There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health.  Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.

I am sitting here looking out at this view (I just took this photo) working on our July newsletter.  It is July 14, 2013 and it is an absolutely glorious day.  I shed the stress of my Bay Area lifestyle on arrival at the Kona Airport and melted into the greens and blues of everyday existence on this breathtaking Island. This is an experience that I wish for all our friends and patients.  This experience of total relaxation and surrender to the embrace of the elements is a prerequisite for profound healing

The most common feedback we receive from our guests is that the photos do not do justice to the experience of being here.  Indeed, the energy of this "Healing Island" seeps in through our pores and reminds us of times when we were younger, more carefree and every day was filled with ease and joy.

If you are thinking of booking, do so before the end of the year and you will receive our "old" rate of $150/night (the rate is now $160/night).  This offer is only available to subscribers of this newsletter. Book soon, as people are already inquiring about end of the year dates.

Pacific Naturopathic in Hawaii is also always available for meditation retreats, health retreats, honeymoons, getaways or as a base for exploring the island.
