Cancer: New Awareness, New Approaches

As time goes by, we're seeing more and more cancer patients at Pacific Naturopathic. We are therefore focusing this month's newsletter on cancer prevention and adjunctive cancer therapies.

Cancer prevention and an anti-inflammatory lifestyle are relevant to us all. Even if cancer is not a current concern, you'll find relevant and informative guidelines below.

We're particularly pleased with "Golden Milk" as a nurturing anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer drink that you can prepare for yourself at home. And, in response to repeated requests from patients and to legalization of naturopathic administration of IV therapies in the state of California, Dr. Marcel has received the advanced training and certification necessary to allow us to offer IV nutritional therapies at Pacific Naturopathic.

Scroll through the articles below for a wealth of information and perspectives on various aspects of cancer care.

The clinic is open M-F 9am-5pm.  The clinic is closed for lunch daily from 12:00 to 1:30 PM

Starting this month and with each future newsletter we will be highlighting intravenous nutrients we will be offering at the clinic.  Although we will offer several different I.V. treatment protocols, for a number of health conditions, intravenous Vitamin C, one of the most heavily researched, is what we will start writing about.  Please see box later in this newsletter for I.V. treatments we will be initially offering.

iv photo Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, occurs naturally in many foods and is available as an oral supplement. The only way humans can acquire Vitamin C is through diet. Vitamin C is important for the synthesis of collagen and certain neurotransmitters, metabolism of protein, and immune system function. It is a potent antioxidant and also regenerates other antioxidants in the body, including vitamin E. Research indicates that vitamin C infused intravenously is effective in treating a number of serious health problems.

In the past 4-5 years, I.V Vitamin C has been used extremely effectively as both a primary and adjunctive treatment for cancer. This 2008 ABC News story reported the beginning of a revolution in how Vitamin C is now used in cancer care.  As the reporter stated, "This is not fringe medicine."

Simply put, here's how vitamin C works against cancer. High
concentrations of vitamin C generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in tissues.  Hydrogen peroxide selectively kills cancer cells through oxidative stress.  The key word here is "selectively," as high dose I.V. vitamin C is harmless to normal, healthy cells.

Extensive safety studies also report that high-dose vitamin C is

vit c
Vitamin C crystal

toxic to a wide variety of cancer cell lines; furthermore, vitamin C boosts the anti-cancer activity of several common chemotherapy drugs.

In addition to I.V. vitamin C's effectiveness against cancer, it has a host of other medical uses. New studies glowingly refer to it as the best antiviral treatment now available. Vitamin C can also help neutralize and eliminate toxins and boost resistance to infection, greatly increasing the immune system's ability to fight off not only viral illnesses, but also bacterial and fungal infections.

Why not just take vitamin C orally?  It is impossible to take therapeutically effective doses of vitamin C orally due to its harsh gastrointestinal effects.  Only through I.V. infusions can those in need receive therapeutic doses without side effects.

The bottom line is that I.V. infusions of vitamin C are safe, effective, beneficial and research driven.

 * * *

Pacific Naturopathic will begin offering intravenous vitamin C infusions on Monday, April 29.  Cost varies with dosage, $100 to $175 per treatment.  Most treatments last from one to two hours.  Infusions are most effective in a series of treatments. We offer discounts when purchased in sets of three, six and twelve treatment packages.

Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors before onset of treatments.  We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than six months. You will need a brief office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs.

We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort.  You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty

At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments.  If you feel you may be helped with I.V. vitamin C infusions, please phone to reserve your space soon.

Getting Back to Our Roots

Recently Dr Marcel and I attended a naturopathic oncology conference in Phoenix. Conference attendees included, among others, medical doctors hoping to offer a more integrated approach to their cancer patients, naturopathic doctors who specialize in oncology and who work hand in hand with conventional oncologists in both in and out patient cancer treatment centers, and doctors like Dr. Marcel and myself.  Because we find more and more cancer patients coming to us at Pacific Naturopathic, Dr. Marcel and I traveled to Arizona to benefit from the clinical and research expertise of the naturopathic oncology centers.

I was immediately reminded at the conference of why it is that I love the naturopathic approach. The conference opened with a touching tribute to the richness brought by all those patients with whom all of us work, and then moments of silence to commemorate those who are no longer with us. A journal/scrapbook was placed at the back of the lecture hall for remembrances, words of inspiration, and a reminder that all of that which was to follow was relevant to real people, real lives.

What followed was three days of presentations by dedicated professionals, the contents of which ranged from the ins and outs of relevant biochemical pathways, to double blind placebo controlled research studies, to clinical findings to focus on specific botanicals and food in general. The information was offered with humor and humility and a level of expertise way beyond that that I've experienced in most like conferences.

At the end of the day(s), it was heartening and validating to find, that though I may have long forgotten much of my biochemistry, and though I may not have read those double blind studies, my conclusions as to the efficacy of various therapeutic options were pretty much the same as the conclusions of the experts. And there was new information as well.

The presentation we most appreciated was given by Dr. Bharat Aggarwal of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The talk was entitled "Anti-Inflammatory Life Style for Prevention and Treatment of Cancer: Facts and Fiction".  Dr. Aggarwal led us through scores of beautiful and complex slides of anti inflammatory pathways, through discussions of the anti- inflammatory properties of statins, steroids, aspirin, and metformin, on to a reminder of the words of Hippocrates "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."  With those words, our journey with Dr. Aggarwal took a turn towards the documented value of "farmaceuticals", of fruits, vegetables, and spices as functional foods.  Dr Aggarwal describes the use of turmeric and like spices as "getting back to our roots." That concept and practice is dear to naturopathic hearts everywhere.

Nurturing Treatments for Cancer

* * *

There are delicious, nutritious, evidence-based adjunctive therapies for Cancer.  Curcumin is one of them.

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

As mentioned in this month's musings, Dr. Marcel and I were quite taken by a presentation by
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's Dr. Bharat B. Aggarwal, who, as it happens, is a world expert on the anti inflammatory and anti carcinogenic properties of turmeric and of its active constituent curcumin.

Many of our patients have heard us promote the healing properties of this wonder root.  We regularly recommend curcumin, and stock curcumin in our dispensary.  General wisdom is that an anti inflammatory dose would be somewhere around 2 grams daily, and an anti carcinogenic dose would be twice that.

Dr. Aggarwal, however, reminded us that, in removing a substance from a plant source, we lose the synergistic properties of other naturally occurring components, and risk side effects that otherwise tend not to occur. He has found that the whole root can provide a certain efficacy even in regular use of small amounts.

This is good news, as we look for more nurturing adjunctive approaches to cancer treatment. Cancer patients in particular may face a daunting array of pills to be taken, often many times a day, and often in spite of lack of appetite, nausea, and a general aversion to taking handfuls of medicines. It just doesn't feel all that healing.

But, how about afternoon tea? I've long had a recipe on my website for turmeric tea.  Click here to view recipe

We've now found an even better way to make that tea. Or rather, Marcus Bachino, caretaker and healer at Pacific Naturopathic Retreat Center in Hawaii, discovered for us  a Youtube video of a Sikh woman making what she calls "Golden Milk."

Golden Milk is an absolutely delicious turmeric drink that feels as nurturing as a cup of hot chocolate. How nurturing it is to sip a delicious afternoon tea in a ceremonial tea cup, and know that it is working its healing magic on you. (See recipe in next section, below.)

One of our aims in treating cancer patients, or every patient for that matter, is to find remedies that are not only effective, but are nurturing, nourishing, and easy to incorporate into a healthy lifestyle. This is a good one! Try it. And if you have others you would like to share with our readers, please send them on.

Quick, Delicious and Easy to Make

  golden milk

Make the Paste

* Put one cup of water in a pan on med-low heat and bring to a slow boil.

* Add  cup turmeric powder

* stir constantly with a wooden or stainless steel spoon for 7-9 minutes.

* Add more water, little by little, as needed to keep from drying out.

* Final product should look like a smooth, pudding-like paste.

* Transfer to a glass (not plastic) jar, cool, cover so it is airtight and store in fridge.  Lasts about 2 weeks.

Make the Milk

* Put 1 teaspoon paste in a pan with 2 cups of unsweetened non-dairy milk (Dr. Khalsa recommends a mixture of soy and almond milks, we've also used coconut milk with outstanding results).

* Can add to the pan a teaspoon of sweetener, like stevia or maple syrup for even better taste.

* Serve when warm.

* Add a 1/4 teaspoon of organic, extra virgin coconut oil to cup when served.  This helps with curcumin absorption.

The War on Cancer:

Are We Winning?

 * * *

True, vibrant health is your birthright.

Cancer and chronic disease are not.

                   Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

The so-called "War on Cancer" has been waged since as long as I can remember.  Billions of dollars are spent every year to support cancer research.  After all these years, are we closer to a cure?  Does it seem to you like more or fewer people are contracting cancer?  How many people that you know personally have contracted cancer? Have the cancer research establishments announced any breakthroughs?  Indeed, what will happen to these research corporations and their tens of thousands of employees when and if a cure for cancer is found?

The focus of the cancer research establishment has been to understand cancer, but mostly in the context of finding drugs to treat it.  It is a testament to the low level of confidence that medical doctors have in chemotherapy that statistics indicate that as many as 75 percent of MDs who contract cancer refuse chemotherapy.  There's something wrong here - something these 75 percent know that the rest of us don't.

To Dr. Connie, Dr. Corrine and myself, research emphasis on drug development is  incredibly misguided.  Research money needs to be focused on education and Prevention, with a capital P, and not on development of drugs. Many new cancer drugs cost more than $10,000 a treatment. These costs drive medical costs sky high and bankrupt individual cancer patients. Contrast these costs with the low cost and proven efficacy of dietary change and exercise in preventing cancer.

proc meats
Poisons in the meat case

How many readers are aware that in 2011, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) concluded that processed meats are extremely carcinogenic? Including hot dogs, bacon, salami and other processed meats in your diet increases the rate of colon cancer by 50 percent, bladder cancer by 59 percent, stomach cancer by 38 percent and pancreatic cancer by 67 percent.  Processed meats may also increase your risk of diabetes by 50 percent, lower your lung function and increase your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Why is this not common knowledge?  Why are these toxic products still on the market?  Forgive my cynicism, but do you think money has anything to do with it?

In medical history, the prevalence of cancer as a leading cause of death in any civilization is almost non-existent.  Yes, there are some references to cancer among the ancient physicians.  But in past centuries, people died of epidemics, infections and hygiene-related diseases.  It is only with the advent of pre-packaged, processed foods and sedentary lifestyles that cancer entered into the cause of death scenario in a big-time way.

In a large study published in the Dec. 7, 2011, issue of the British Journal of Cancer, researchers examined data on cancer cases that occurred in the U.K. between 1993 and 2007. The researchers then calculated the proportion of cancers that could be attributed to the following risk factors: drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, not eating enough fruits and vegetables, not eating enough fiber, consuming red and processed meat, consuming excess salt, being overweight or obese, not exercising, infections (such as HPV), sun damage,  radiation exposure and occupational exposure to chemicals.

The researchers concluded the study by saying; "We hope this study helps to raise awareness of the fact that cancer is not simply a question of fate and that people can make changes today that can reduce their risk of developing cancer in the future."

So, what do we do with this information about diet and lifestyle?  True, lasting change is easier to talk about than to accomplish.  Behavioral psychologists say that it takes people at least eight weeks to break an old habit pattern or establish a new one.  Even after then, it takes persistence.

If you have trouble deciding what you need to do and how to do it, make an appointment to talk with us.  We have been helping people successfully accomplish their goals for many years.  Remember that true, vibrant health is your birthright.  Cancer and chronic disease are not.

Intravenous Nutritional Protocols

at Pacific Naturopathic

 * * *

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.

* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.

* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.

* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.

* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.

* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 15 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.

To name a few:

            IV Glutathione

            IV Alpha Lipoic Acid

            IV Vit C

            Amino Acid infusions

            Vitamin and Mineral drips

  The Cancer Prevention Lifestyle

Your Choices Determine Your Health

As cancer becomes more prevalent around us, more and more research is being done to find its causes as well as different treatments for it.

We know that the myriad of chemicals around us in our food and environment can cause harm to our bodies and can progress to conditions such as cancer.

Knowing this, what are some of the things we can do to best prevent cancer?  Some basic tips are listed below.

* Limit toxic exposures. Decrease known food and environmental allergens to help decrease the number of things the body's immune system has to fight against.

* Stop smoking and decrease alcohol intake, as both of these have been linked to a number of different cancers including lung, throat, mouth, bladder, pancreas, stomach cancers, and others.

* Try and buy foods as organic as possible while also limiting packaged foods - pay particular attention to the dirty dozen, as these foods have the most pesticides in them.

* Limit the amount of sauting or frying of foods to decrease the burning of oils that can create carcinogenic compounds.  Try lightly steaming vegetables instead, which also maintains most of the vitamins and minerals in them.

* Increase plant-based foods. Choose a wide range of colors of fruits and vegetables.  They are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants (like beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E) to help protect against cancer and boost your immune system.

More veggies also means more fiber, the part of plants that your body can not digest that helps to keep food moving through the digestive system.  Fiber helps to bind with and eliminate cancer-causing compounds before they can create harm in the body.

* Add immune-boosting spices and foods such as garlic, onion, ginger, and curry powder which also have a variety of cancer-fighting nutrients. Other good choices include turmeric, basil, rosemary, and coriander.

* Drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water.  Keeping your body hydrated allows it to circulate nutrients to the rest of your body as well as diluting and flushing out any toxins or wastes that need to be eliminated.

* Exercise.  Exercise to shed extra pounds, as being overweight or obese accounts for 20% of all cancer deaths among women and 14% among men, notes the American Cancer Society. (You're overweight if your body mass index is between 25 and 29.9; you're obese if it's 30 or more.)

Exercise also increases circulation to the rest of your tissues and supports elimination of wastes through sweating.

* Manage stress.  Decrease the number of stressors, if possible, or incorporate more stress-reducing techniques (i.e. yoga, meditation, bodywork, walking, exercise, etc.) to prevent the damage to the body that stress causes.  Prolonged stress decreases the immune system affects a number of other systems in the body, which can lead to chronic illnesses.

On the flip-side, happiness boosts your immune system, so adding in more of the things you love can also help in preventing illnesses.

These are some basic guidelines that can be followed not only for helping to prevent cancer but also in supporting general wellness overall.  Though simple, coming back to the basics can make the most significant impacts on physical and mental health.  They are the most essential ingredients for maintaining a healthy, vibrant life!

Non-Invasive,Radiation Free, Informative

Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

As we've noted many times, a powerful use of breast thermography is in monitoring the efficacy of treatment protocols. A hot area on one breast not present on the other breast generally indicates a physiologic process happening in the one breast. Often the process is a process of inflammation.

We have many ways to reduce inflammation. The use of anti inflammatory  "farmaceuticals" is one such way. While we have not compared before and after breast thermography readings taken after the use of a single botanical such as turmeric root, we have seen many women whose thermography readings and thermographic risk ratings fall after they commit to and follow an anti inflammatory diet.

Though many people prefer dietary change to medicines, they often find it hard to commit to a dietary practice, as they really don't know whether what they are doing is enough to cause a significant change in their body. When breast health is at issue, breast thermography is one way to find out.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

At our farm at Pacific Naturopathic in Hawaii we have focused on growing as many of our own foods and medicines as we can.  Our goal is sustainability: to get out of the agribusiness and pharmaceutical systems and provide for ourselves.  In addition to over 40 species of tropical fruit trees and a large vegetable garden, here are a few of the many medicinal crops ("Farmaceuticals") we are growing in pursuit of our goal:

turmeric Turmeric.

Olena is the Hawaiian word for turmeric, and this newsletter is packed with turmeric information. We have been harvesting turmeric from our garden for our own use for several years. We have now planted a larger area so we can offer it to out friends and family as well.  If you would like to purchase Hawaiian-grown turmeric by the pound, the Kai Malino Wellness Center grows some of the best.

Neem trees.

In India, Neem trees are known as "Nature's pharmacy

in a tree."  Indeed, Neem has received a lot of recent attention and research for its use in treating a wide variety of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, AIDS, tooth decay, heart disease, chronic fatigue, heat-rash, boils, wounds, jaundice, leprosy, skin disorders, stomach ulcers, chicken pox and many others.

moringa Moringa.

The primary benefit of Moringa Oleifera is the high nutritional value of the leaves.  In total, there are over 90 different vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients in Moringa oleifera. There is no other "superfood" on Earth that can make a claim like this. Research on Moringa also has indicated medicinal benefits, including: lowering blood pressure, improving mood, improving digestion, improving immune system function, treating stomach ulcers, improving chronic fatigue, and many others.
