"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Greetings,

I write to you today with an update on a ministry adventure that has been in the works for the last 9 months. After weekly gatherings that began as large group discernment meetings and evolved into a small, self-selected leadership circle, we are excited to share a piece of our discernment story and an invitation for you to join the first gathering!

The leadership circle was eager to add dinner to our discernment meetings after a few sessions. We decided to go potluck style. At our first meeting with food, we planned to discuss the elements of Episcopal worship and how they can function with flexibility. After a lively conversation and a rich feast of great variety, we were inspired to apply the same spirit of potluck to our worship together. The following week we gathered around the same dinner table, only this time, we each brought a dish to share as well as a worship offering. While we knew who was bringing the opening prayer, we did not know what it would be or what food would be on our table. In this way, we shared in an experience of Holy Communion around a shared meal, complete with song, biblical reflections, prayers, and broken bread, in a way that was communally created.

This gathering was a pivotal one for our circle; it helped us gain clarity around our mission. While church members, seekers, and neighbors are often hungry for an encounter with the Holy, many yearn to actively contribute to community inspiration in addition to coming to receive nourishment. In the past few months, we brainstormed a variety of other community gatherings that were rooted in this highly participatory philosophy.

As a result, in the coming months the leadership circle will host a variety of casual and interactive Friday evening gatherings that are designed to foster community among Trinity members and friends out in the community. We welcome your attendance and feedback as we continue to discern.

Tomorrow I am excited to invite EVERYONE to the first gathering:

Potluck Dinner Church

When: Friday August 29th at 7:30pm

Where: Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento

Potluck dinner church is a casual encounter with community and communion around a shared meal. Everyone contributes to the experience by volunteering to bring a dish, or the opening prayer, a song, or the candles etc... All are welcome at the table and invited to offer what they have (bread, joy, hummus, questions...) and be open to receiving what is offered (punch, friendship, connections, cake...)

Hope to see you tomorrow night,

Megan +

Ministry Opportunities

Stephen Ministry Logo

A Gift for Listening

We all have challenging times in life. Sometimes we need a friend to walk through those times with us. A Stephen Minister is trained to do just that: to come along side another in their journey, to encourage when encouragement is needed, to be a compassionate companion, to listen.

If you can give one hour once a week to meet with someone who's going through a difficult time, then you may be the perfect candidate to be a Stephen Minister.

If you would like to learn more about this dynamic ministry, please see Cherie or Dana Chamness in the Bookshop between services on Sundays or call the Bookshop at 916-442-9194. Or call Susan Wilson at 916-835-2799.

Embracing an Alternative Orthodoxy: Richard Rohr on the Legacy of St. Francis

Presenter: Canon Lynell Walker

Richard Rohr's exploration of what we hold to be the anchors of the Christian faith through the lens of the life and teachings of St. Francis.  Rohr is always teaching us to live beyond possibility yet does so by drawing on our rich tradition. All materials will be provided.

Ruth-less Religion

Presenter: Morey Lloyd

This short three act play in the Book of Ruth reveals a reformation within the Scriptures to upset even the staunchest believer by demonstrating the true nature of the Eternal One. Here we find the redeeming inclusiveness of the promise of life lived to its fullness. Drama overshadows the Dogma of what it means to love the neighbor. Life becomes a witness to the Acts of God.

Welcome back to Sunday School!

Sunday School begins September 14!

We are so excited to begin a new program year! Sunday School is offered to all children and youth ages 4 through 12th grade from 10:15 to 11:15 during the school year. We cannot claim to be faith filled people without knowing the stories and practices of our faith. Theologian Jerome Berryman said, "To carry stories is to become wisdom-bearers, God-bearers, like Mary herself." Our Sunday School program works in conjunction with our worship services, Children's Chapel, Acolyte program, and youth group to help children and youth claim their identity as faith filled and faithful people. Our Sunday School program includes:

Preschool: Our preschool program, Heart Shaper, is designed to engage young children in Bible stories through multisensory activities, crafts, songs, and games.

Godly Play: For kindergarten and first graders, Godly Play is a Montessori approach to faith formation, which helps children explore their faith using a spiral curriculum including Bible stories, our sacraments, and the seasons of the church year through wonder and play.

Faith Builders: Our second and third graders will explore a new program this year! As Faith Builders, they will explore and reflect on our faith and the stories that form us through Legos!

Explorers: Fourth and fifth grades use a variety of materials, including the Episcopal Children's Curriculum and Godly Play at the intermediate levels, to explore in greater depth our sacraments, liturgy, and the Bible.

Junior High: Junior high youth in grades sixth through eighth use a lectionary based curriculum, Faith Lens, and a Bible based program called re:form. They discuss, explore and reflect on the Sunday gospel reading or a Bible story, and its implications for our daily lives.

Senior High: Senior high uses a variety of materials to explore foundational aspects of our faith and contemporary issues to ask what it means to be faithful in the world we live in today.

Family Promise

Family Promise is Coming September 28th!

Trinity will once again host our homeless sisters and brothers the week of September 28th. There are many ways you can help and support this important outreach ministry. When our guests arrive, we need loving volunteers to welcome and spend quality time with the families, cook, serve and clean up after supper and stay the night. You decide the type and extent of your commitment. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Great Hall. Many hands make light and joyful work!

Family Promise Sacramento is the local representation of a nationwide program focusing on homeless families with children. They are supported in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing opportunities to develop skills to improve their lives. A number of Sacramento faith communities are involved in this program. Congregations open their doors for a week at a time to families who have been selected to participate.

During the day, the Family Promise Day Center (located in the Loaves & Fishes complex) provides a safe and secure haven for the families offering essential services such as showers, laundry facilities, a mailing address, computers and food. The center also provides access to telephones and computers. Adults receive assistance in preparing for and finding employment and permanent housing as well as improving literacy and life skills.

Every evening, Family Promise transports the families from the day center to the congregation that is hosting them for the week. Families receive dinner and each family is provided a private room with bedding at the church. Breakfast is served each morning.

For more information about Family Promise and how you can help, please contact our amazing Family Promise Coordinator, Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com or Deacon Steve Skiffington at deaconskiff@gmail.com.
