May is when we get to honor our inspiring Class of 2015, making it one of our favorite times of the year! This month we also hear how alumna Kellee Coleman is bounding ahead with her education. Plus Natalie Ross, '15, offers her forward-looking commencement poem in the Final Word.
Class of 2015 Celebrates Graduation

On Monday, May 18, the Free Minds Class of 2015 gathered to celebrate the completion of the two-semester course. They were joined by friends, family members, and program supporters for a ceremony at UT's Harry Ransom Center. With 21 students walking the stage, the group is the largest graduating class since the program began in 2006, a point of pride for class speaker Todd Readoaux who said, "All of us had something we had to overcome in order to make it."

The ceremony also included remarks from Foundation Communities Executive Director Walter Moreau, ACC Provost Dr. Charles Cook, and Free Minds alumna Kellee Coleman. Austin poet and translator Liliana Valenzuela read works from her book Codex of Journeys: Bendito Camino, and students Jennifer Rambo and Natalie Ross shared original poems. (See the Final Word for an excerpt.)

Summing up her Free Minds experience, student Corina Esparza wrote, "I have learned to question the world around me. I now look for answers and evidence to support it. Free Minds has changed me forever." To learn more about our recent graduates, you can view their bios here. Big congratulations, Class of 2015!

Kellee Coleman Shines at St. Edward's

When Kellee Coleman applied for Free Minds in 2007, she arrived at her interview with her infant son in a carrier and proceeded to soothe her fussy baby while answering questions about her educational goals. It was clear that she is a woman who can juggle responsibilities while bringing a fierce intellect to any conversation.

That intellect is taking her far. In 2012 she completed her associate's degree at ACC, and this month she earned her bachelor's from St. Edward's University. A mother of three, Kellee majored in sociology while researching how racism impacts infant and maternal mortality in Austin. Her community work training women of color earned her a Brown Scholarship.

She was also honored as a McNair Scholar, a program that helps prepare students for doctoral studies. She hopes to head to graduate school soon. In her remarks at the Class of 2015 graduation, Kellee  reminded graduates that life will change, but there are things they can claim from their Free Minds experience.

"Whatever you do going forward, it is important to hold on to an intellectual piece of yourself," she told graduates. "Keep the part of yourself you connected to during these nine months."

Natalie Ross, '15, capped off the graduation ceremony with this powerful message to her fellow classmates

Three generations: Natalie Ross (left) with her daughter and mother

I want for you to know that this is not the end

So do not untie your shoes and slip them off,

Do not take off your hat and put it on its hook

Do not say there is nothing left to learn in this book.

I want you to turn your head towards the sun

Even when the clouds lay thick and woolen

Because we both know it is still there

I want you to take a drink of water and imagine a river

And keep moving and gurgling through the days

I want you to turn off the radio of distraction in your head

And pick up your pen and cry it out with ink.

.............................................................................

I want you to want to know more

To want to know more than you think you know

Because you are worthy

You were always worthy.

Natalie lives in East Austin with her daughter Lola and her two dogs Paco and Xochitl. She works as a child care specialist at the UT Child Development Center, cares for special needs kids at the nonprofit Growing Roots, and dreams of living to write.
