Spring semester is coming into bloom at Free Minds. From poetry to yoga, from Carnival ah! to the Ransom Center, read on for ways to grow with us in the coming months. Plus, graduate Harolyn Collins takes the Final Word.
Students To Share Their Work at Carnival ah!

Free Minds is ramping up for Carnival ah!, ACC's annual festival of the arts and humanities. Students from the Class of 2013 will give a reading, adding their voices to the chorus of those answering the question, "How did you get here?"

This year's Carnival ah! will also feature a number of fun opportunities for kids! They will have the chance to learn how to give a step performance, get dizzy in the bouncy house, and go home with new books.

Please come support our students and hear them share their stories. Bring your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to remind us that the arts and humanities are for all of us!

Post-World War II, Newman was formulating a new approach to portraiture, capturing iconic subjects like Pablo Picasso, Marilyn Monroe, and Mickey Mantle in their own environments. Through this trademark style, Newman created works of lasting cultural resonance.

The Final Word

Post-Free Minds, Alumna Harolyn Collins Keeps Goals in her Sights

When I think of my experience with Free Minds a smile comes to my face. My name is Harolyn Collins, and I am a graduating member of the Class of 2011. I knew nothing about the program until I read an article in one of the local community papers. I applied immediately, because where else would you get the opportunity to attend school free of cost and get college credits at the same time? When I received the letter saying that I was accepted, I became nervous because I didn't think that I could do this, but I overcame my fears and enjoyed every moment. Nine months later, when it was time to graduate and I looked back on the class, I realized that I had met wonderful individuals who I would not forget. Being a graduate put me in a society of learners that I am proud to be part of.

Recently, I took the Free Minds goal setting workshop. Two years after graduating, I felt like my life was spinning in circles, and I still had not achieved any of the goals that I set for myself. This workshop was eye-opening, and the instructor Lynne was amazing! The first day I got to class we had to introduce ourselves, and I met a former Free Minds graduate named Michelle. Michelle and I joked that we were twins separated at birth because our goals were so similar. Another class that really impacted me was the day we created vision boards. We used magazines to cut out items that reflected our hopes and dreams for the future. I now have my completed vision board hanging in my room where I can see it every day. The thought behind this is that if you see it, you can achieve it. Through this class I learned to write my goals down and to take small steps that will lead to bigger steps.

I have recommended Free Minds to people, and I even invited my neighbor to join me for the goal setting workshop. She loved it and is excited to apply for the next semester of Free Minds classes. I tell her that Free Minds is an experience you will never forget!
