"Images take me apart; images put me back together again,
new, enlarged, with breathing room."
This is the opening sentence of "Art is a Way of Knowing": A Guide to Self-Knowledge and Spiritual Fulfillment through Creativity, Pat B. Allen's first book. (Shambhala, 1995).
I picked this book up at the time that I was first discovering expressive arts, and, by the time I had finished reading it the next day, my personal and professional life seemed to have opened to new possibilities, and my perspective had shifted. Pat's writing provided me with a map, a guide, a light that illuminated what was, for me, a compelling, but still vague and undefined pathway.
She wrote: "I believe we can, any of us, at any time, pick up a paintbrush and create a new fork in the road to travel that may lead us each to our authentic home, which is deep within, and outward again to our right place in the world". Oh! Yes. That has been and continues to be, true for me, for my partners and colleagues, for our students and clients and workshop participants over the years. And Pat has continued to inspire and guide through her two books and her amazing work in the world. ...Kathleen
