Increasing African American Participation in
Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials
Thursday, September 15th, 1:00 pm
Presenters and Panelist

African American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates of any racial or ethnic group in the U. S. However, participation in clinical trials for new therapies rarely reaches statistically significant levels, making it impossible to know the true benefits and risks of these drugs on this high-risk population. This session, moderated by Mr. Terrance Afer-Anderson, will explore the major issues contributing to the lack of clinical trials participation and address actions that could increase participation. Dr. Edith Mitchell will present an overview of contributing factors for the low clinical trials participation for African American patients, and outline solutions and strategies that could boost participation. Dr. Steven Patierno will use his research which emphasizes why it is important to increase participation, and discuss approaches that his institution has taken to do so. They will join a panel discussion that will include medical directors within major pharmaceuticals that conduct prostate cancer clinical trials: Dr. Gwen Shang, Dr. Hong Tang and Dr. Peter Francis. Mr. Paul Covington, a prostate cancer survivor, and Dr. Lannis Hall, a clinical trials specialist are also participants on the panel.
