Greetings!
Is summer ever going to get here? Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying life. We've kept busy at the office and have been working hard to keep up with the ever changing financial landscape. I've also brought on a new money management firm to help us with the equity (stock market) side of our business. Their history is very impressive over the past ten years. They've had an annual rate of return of over 12% (net of fees), with only one year of negative returns (-3.8%). That's a very good track record during a very volatile period. Blending or laddering these folks with our current strategies has opened up some additional opportunities for our clients. I'd encourage you to learn more. Kelly and I have also added some additional companies to assist with Medicare Supplement planning that can help many folks lower their health care costs. We've come across lots of folks that have had their Medicare Supplement premiums increase quite a bit over the past few years. So, if you feel you're paying too much, give Kelly a call at the office. We may have a better option for you. As always, enjoy this month's articles, and if anyone would like any of our free reports just let us know. We've added some really good ones lately! Just go to our website to check them out.
Sincerely, James D. Stillman Attention Clients: We still have 4 open spots on our food tour of NoDa this Saturday April 6th from 12:00-3:30pm. What is "The Fiduciary Standard",
and Why Should You Care?
Lake Norman Magazine, April 2013
|
In the crazy world of financial services, many folks get confused about who does what, and why. Today, one of the most debated topics is "The Fiduciary Standard vs. Suitability Standard". I'll explain both, so hopefully you'll be armed with information to make good investment choices as to what type of firm is best for you. Typically, banks and wire house broker/dealers (stock brokers) offer advice based on a suitability standard. Registered Investment Advisors / Investment Advisor Representatives offer advice based on the fiduciary standard.

Focus on Total Return
GFPC Thought for the Week (243)
|
*Total return for a stock consists of two components: income paid (dividends) and capital appreciation (stock price increase).
*Studies show that dividends have comprised over 50% of the total return of the stock market over the past 70+ years.
*High dividend yielding stocks have experienced strong price appreciation over the last four years but recently they have lagged.
*We expect the weakness in dividend paying stocks to be short lived with the dividend contribution to total return resuming its level of benefit to the long term investor.

Sell in May and Go Away
GFPC Thought for the Week (246)
|
*The old saying, "Sell in May and go away" is predicated upon a tendency to see a decline in equities beginning in the month of May and lasting until early Fall.
*Several market factors indicate that we could see this effect come earlier this year.
*As a result, we are reducing exposure to specific areas in the market that we feel are overvalued so we can position ourselves to take advantage of opportunities that may arise later in the year.
