Normalizing Nudity

The teenage years are a time of rapid change. The most obvious changes are physical.

Growth spurts make coordination as well as good-fitting clothes elusive. Voice changes, acne, body odor, not to mention secondary sex characteristics all feed a self-esteem crisis.

Am I Normal?

How do they answer this question?

1. Other teens. Teens compare themselves to their friends. Peer-pressure rises to an all-time high.

2. Media. The average teen will spend roughly 25% of their waking hours just watching media. Add Facebook and social media, pornography, and music. Media now has our teens' attention as much and maybe more than school.

I have written before that my own quest to be normal was a huge factor in my early sexual activity.

An alarming trend in television is the normalizing of nudity.

The following TV shows are already showing are have been announced for the near future:

  • Naked Castaway -Discovery Channel series about a person without clothes surviving for 60 days on a deserted island.
  • Naked and Afraid - Discovery Channel series like Survivor except there are only two contestants and they are without clothes.
  • Naked Vegas - Syfy Channel reality show about a body painting business.
  • Buying Naked - TLC series aboutnudist couples buying homes.
  • Naked Dating - VH1 reality show.

The entertainment website The Wrap reports "Programming executives [are] being flooded with pitches for naked dating shows ... One [said] that he has already seen "a dozen naked dating pitches" cross his desk this year."

Most of these shows will pixilate or cleverly hide sexual body parts. The bigger problem is that nudity is now taken out of the context of sexual contact. Nudity is about survival or buying a home or style or open honest dating.

Our young people will learn that nudity isn't necessarily sexual or intimate. It is normal.
