QANTAS AND EMIRATES PARTNERSHIP

Two of the world's iconic airlines are forming a global partnership following interim approval by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Travellers can now book their Qantas marketed flights (on services operated by Qantas or Emirates) to a broad range of destinations worldwide. For travel from 31 March 2013, Emirates and Qantas passengers are able to choose from 98 flights a week from Australia to Dubai and over 800 connecting flights per week to Europe, the Middle East and Africa making it even easier to see more of the world.

Dubai will become a one-stop hub, opening up Europe for Qantas passengers with access to 33 European destinations, including daily A380 flights to London Heathrow, Paris, Rome and other great cities.

The next step in the partnership between Qantas and Emirates means that for bookings from 22 January 2013, for travel from 31 March 2013, passengers will earn points and Status credits when flying on Qantas marketed flights operated by Emirates (with Qantas flight number).

On selected international flights, First and Business Class travellers can be driven to the airport in a luxury vehicle to meet the flight. On arrival at the destination travellers can be met by another chauffeur service and driven to their hotel, office or home.

From state-of-the-art aircraft, to award-winning inflight entertainment and service, their partnership will set the standard in international travel. And with reciprocal frequent flyer rewards, recognition and lounge access it's time to benefit from the best of both worlds.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES TO EXPAND AUSTRALIA CAPACITY AND UPGRADE BOEING 777-200 CABINS

Singapore Airlines has just announced the introduction of a fourth daily Melbourne-Singapore flight, with the additional service commencing from 01 July 2013.

The new flight will depart in the evening, providing additional connectivity to key markets in Asia and Europe via  the Singapore Airlines hub.

"This fourth daily service opens a new window of travel options for our customers in Victoria, the benefit being an additional connection to popular destinations like London as well as India, and importantly reduced connecting times for visitors from Europe and Asia," said Singapore Airlines regional vice president South-West Pacific, Subhas Menon.

Singapore Airlines has also announced increased capacity on the Adelaide-Singapore route, which will increase to 12 per week from the current 10, also effective from 01 July. Together the Melbourne and Adelaide increases will lift the total number of weekly flights operated to Australia by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir to 121.

Other changes will see Singapore Airlines add frequencies to Fukuoka, Osaka and Copenhagen, while the Singapore-Moscow-Houston route will increase to a daily service.

Singapore Airlines also announced an upgrade of their Boeing 777-200 cabins. The refitted aircraft will be servicing more destinations across Europe, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Nearly SGD$95 million will  be invested to refit ten Boeing 777-200 aircrafts with new long-haul cabin products to provide customers with additional space and comfort. The cabin upgrade programme will provide greater product consistency across the Airline's long-haul fleet, with Business Class seats  that convert into fully flat beds and larger in-flight entertainment screen sizes for both Business Class and Economy Class.

The first refitted Boeing 777-200 will operate between Singapore and Amsterdam.

BRITISH AIRWAYS A380 CONFIGURATION

International Airlines Group chief Willie Walsh has revealed the layout of British Airways' A380 which is expected to be delivered by Airbus later this year.

In July 2013, British Airways' inaugural A380 will enter the fleet with 469 seats, featuring an enhanced 14 seat First Class cabin, 97 Club World seats, 55 World Traveller Plus and 303 World Traveller seats.

Additional superjumbos will be delivered in August and October 2013. The new aircraft "will feature BA's latest signature designs to ensure the customer experience maintains the highest standard across the fleet" Walsh said.

British Airway's A380 will be decked out with the latest Thales In-Flight Entertainment , offering 50% more movies and 200% more TV / audio programs and music. All cabins will feature larger personal screens and for the first time, in-seat power across all cabin classes.

MALAYSIA AIRLINES TO JOIN ONEWORLD ALLIANCE

Award winning Malaysia Airlines is all set to become the 12th member of the award winning OneWorld alliance from 1 February 2013.

This year, Malaysia Airlines won the World's Best Cabin Crew award for the seventh time in eleven years, with its in-flight satay dish also voted as the Best Airline Signature Dish by Skytrax, the UK based world's leading airline and airport review organisation. In addition Skytrax awarded Malaysia Airlines the 5-star airline status this year, an award that was made possible through its consistent 40 years of exclusive Malaysian Hospitality delivery to its customers.

Malaysia Airlines will start offering OneWorld's full range of services and benefits from 1 February 2013 and will be the second carrier in the alliance operating the A380 after Qantas, its OneWorld entry sponsor. Its Frequent Flyer members of Enrich will be able to earn miles also by traveling on OneWorld carriers and enjoy greater redemption options on both Malaysia Airlines as well as on OneWorld member carriers.

AIRPORT BODY SCANNER

Since December 2012, body scanner screening has been introduced at Australia's eight international gateway airports - Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Body scanners are being introduced as an additional layer of security that includes walk-through metal detectors, restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels, explosive trace detection and police presence.

One body scan emits 10,000 times less radio frequency energy than an average mobile phone call, which is significantly less than the maximum permissible exposure levels for the public set by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.

To protect the privacy of the travelling public, it will be a requirement that body scanners deployed in Australia must be equipped with privacy enhancements. The current generation body scanner is equipped with automatic threat recognition technology. This removes the need for screening officers to view detailed or 'naked' images and instead highlights areas of concern on a generic 'stick' figure. In addition, the body scanner is not able to store personal information about passengers or the screen display generated from individual scans.

CRUISE LINER QUEEN ELIZABETH II BECOMES A HOTEL

Singapore's Oceanic Group is set to transform the retired Queen Elizabeth II into a floating hotel for new owner Drydocks World. The 45 year old vessel has sat virtually idle in Dubai since it was sold in 2007 for about $100 million.

Queen Elizabeth II's revival plan includes renovating the ship into a 5-star 500-room hotel which will feature a shopping mall, a cafe offering meals similar to what was served during the ship's heyday and three Michelin-starred restaurants, along with convention and meeting facilities.

The project will also see Queen Elizabeth II relocated from Port Rashid in Dubai to an Asian city with a rich maritime heritage and prominent waterfront.
