WHAT IS BEHIND THE DAILY NEWS CRUSADE TO KEEP THE CARRIAGE HORSES?
"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."
The NY Daily News is not a bastion of journalistic integrity. Since at least this past September they have been on a crusade to crush Mayor deBlasio using the carriage horse issue as their vehicle. But what is really going on here? We do not believe that the Daily News cares that much for the horses or the drivers. But they make good poster children and a great metaphor to represent deBlasio's progressive agenda. Get deBlasio on an emotional issue like horses and jobs and the other things will just fall away like dominoes. In 2011, the DN slashed several jobs in a down sizing. They are "crying" more for the carriage drivers than their own employees, one of whom was 68 and had worked at the paper for 43 years. Yes - something is indeed going on at the Daily News and it is not about compassion for the drivers or their horses. Please take a look at our last newsletter where this was address more extensively. CLICK HERE.

The articles that have been produced by the DN on this issue since September should be an embarrassment to any self respecting journalist.

ANOTHER DISGRACEFUL DAILY NEWS ARTICLE
manipulates interview for their own purposes
The article from yesterday uses an interview with John Holland, president of Equine Welfare Alliance, to try to make their case that there are many horses that need homes and will go to slaughter. Horses being given away on the Internet could end up in slaughter houses

The Daily News and the carriage owners are so desperate to prevent a ban that they lie and manipulate the truth. This has never been a competition about which horses are more needy. Nor should it be. The urban carriage horses have it bad and NYC must shut down this trade. However, Holland was interviewed by Bill Hutchinson but never told that it was an article against a ban. As a matter of fact, Holland told me "He [DN reporter] conveniently omitted the fact that I volunteered our position on the urban carriage horses and that we were against the practice. He simply represented the article as being about horses put on Craig's list. I knew that the right was attacking de Blasio over the issue, but did not know about this string of articles. My respect for journalism has reached a new low!" Reporters with integrity do not conduct these kinds of interviews. Shame on the Daily News and Bill Hutchinson.

COMMENTS ON THE DN WEBSITE REGARDING THIS ARTICLE
viglet - The main contributing factor sending tens of thousands of horses to slaughter isn't individual owners advertising on Craig's list, but industries-like horse racing, rodeo, breeding, pharmaceutical and carriage horse trade-that dump horses at auction when they no longer are profitable. If Daily News wants New Yorkers to "save horses," it should discourage the public from supporting these businesses. Fewer horses dumped as part of someone's business model will mean more available homes for those individuals who reluctantly let go of a beloved pet when they can no longer afford them. stfrancis - I'm surprised the DN doesn't work the horse carriage angle into every story. C'mon guys, try harder. There are still a few stories out there where you haven't shamelessly promoted this niche industry.

ay wright - Totally correct, StFrancis. This particular article is a disgrace in additiion: NYClass wants to stop the slavery, oppression and exploitation of a particular industry. To denigrate that by saying they should 'save horses on the internet' is NOT the point and diminishes a heartfelt effort to STOP abuse where it SHOULD be stopped. We all want to stop animals from being harmed everywhere, DN. This ridiculous article slams activists over a situation that 'may' happen; and no, DN, no one - not you, or the carriage horse industry, or ANYONE can rescue all animals everywhere, including those sold on the 'net.

WHERE IS CEASAR? FORMER NYC CARRIAGE HORSE
The Daily News can find out! - but will they?
The Associated Press recently reported that driver/owner Frank Luo was charged with changing the hoof ID number on Spartacus, a 22-year old horse with heaves, to that of a younger horse so he could work him. When the Department of Health started to close in, Luo sold Spartacus to Norman Martin, a farmer in Pennsylvania. Martin was highlighted in a Daily News story as training horses for the NYC carriage trade. We wonder what use he would have with a 22-year old sick horse.

We want to know what happened to Ceasar and have asked the Daily News writer to look into it. We will let you know if we learn anything.. (plates are whitewashed - #1132. - Why do the authorities continue to turn their backs and let the drivers get away with this kind of behavior?)

Thanks to all of you who have donated to our campaign. It is much appreciated. This is from a new series Enough is Enough.

CONTACT THE MAYOR THROUGH THE INTERNET
tell him you want a ban not a phase out
For the last 9 months, there has been an onslaught by the media against the proposed carriage horse ban. The media has presented the issue from the carriage drivers' point of view. From Fox News to CNN and Channel 11 in NYC -- the Daily News, Post and NY Times. Even AM-NY. They have all lied with no shame.

Contact Mayor deBlasio - tell him that you want a ban of horse-drawn carriages THIS YEAR. If he delays it for three years or if there is another accident, it will hurt him politically. Tell him that you voted for him because he promised to ban the trade - and even on the first day he took office, which we knew was an impossibility. Now he has put a time frame on it until the end of the year. . Click Here. Please be respectful.
