ANOTHER SPOOKING ACCIDENT IN NYC
Horse spooks from bus
A horse named Spartacus was spooked by a bus on Wednesday evening April 23rd. This is the Gothamist report. The carriage drivers claim that the carriage wheel got entangled with the wheels of another.carriage causing Spartacus' carriage to tip over.
Such spin. This is the truth. If Spartacus spooked due to a bus, tried to run away and fell over - HORSES SHOULD NOT BE IN TRAFFIC AND THE TRADE NEEDS TO BE BANNED. But if the carriage wheels got entangled, it means that THE DRIVERS ARE INCOMPETENT AND BAD HORSEMEN, DROVE MUCH TOO CLOSE AND THE TRADE NEEDS TO BE ABOLISHED.
So matter what happened, this inhumane and unsafe business must be shut down. Horses falling over on the street like that is simply not acceptable. They say that Spartacus was fine. But we do not buy for a minute that Spartacus was not bruised from his fall with the carriage landing on him.
FOLLOW THE MONEY
who is behind the Daily News crusade to cripple Mayor deBlasio?
THERE HAS BEEN A MEDIA BLACK OUT ON THE TRUTH. The carriage horse issue is not as it appears in the press. This is the first thing any thinking person has to realize. You must question everything you read. This is particularly so with the NY Daily News in their crusade to derail deBlasio. Daily News readers, with no interest in this issue, must be wondering why the DN has promoted it as the most important issue in NYC. They do not care about the horses or the drivers. But this makes a wonderful metaphor for them to indirectly attack deBlasio's progressive agenda. The image of horses being hugged and kissed by their " working class" owners is perfect for their campaign. BUT IS IT TRUE? The answer can only be NO.
So what is really going on? The Daily News, owned by conservative billionaire Mort Zuckerman, endorsed Speaker Christine Quinn in the race for mayor. Zuckerman, a friend of Mayor Bloomberg, had entree to City Hall and it is assumed if Quinn won, that would have continued - enabling him to influence policy. But Quinn had a lot of baggage -- slush fund scandal, killing term limits, dictatorial control over the
City Council -- among other things. She was already on the hot seat. Then Anthony Weiner entered the mayoral race and began to poll very well. New Yorkers have always loved Weiner and forgave him his first round of indiscretions. But then it came out that he had never stopped "sexting" and his fate was sealed. Google Daily News coverage of deBlasio before the election -- you will see they tried to crush him every day on numerous issues. It did not have an effect and he handily won the November election. Although they reluctantly backed him against Joe Lhota, something changed and they now want to kill him off -- politically, that is. The people did not want Christine Quinn to be mayor and her slide in the polls began well before the anti Quinn ads were aired. The DN can spin it to serve their purposes, but the Defeat Christine Quinn was begun by Donny Moss in 2009 and had begun to have an effect, being covered in the news as early as January 2013.
This is the DN spiel: "Save the carriage horses because Mayor deBlasio wants to send them to slaughter and because of campaign contributions from Steve Nislick, real estate developer, wants to turn convert the stable property to luxury housing. " This is not true, but it is very difficult for the average person to get the correct information.
WHO ARE THE PLAYERS BESIDES THE DAILY NEWS
This is about political ideology. - not the carriage horses
THE CAVALRY GROUP: an anti-animal lobbying group from St. Louis that is pro horse slaughter; pro puppy mills and lobbies around the country against strengthening animal cruelty legislation. Their leaders also back the Tea Party. WHOSE MONEY IS BEHIND THIS FOR THE NYC CAMPAIGN?
TEAMSTERS: The Teamsters "represent" the drivers in Local 553. It is not a real union shop and any authentic union member should be upset about this. They collect $60 per member for monthly dues. They do not provide health care benefits, vacations or sick time. They are solely a lobbying group for the drivers - we call it a "fake union." Not all drivers belong to the union and owners / non-owners are part of the same local. The Teamsters are taking a strong stand supporting the carriage drivers, but they are making a HUGE mistake in going after deBlasio who is pro union and whom they supported in the election. Siding with the right wing Daily News and right wing/Tea party Cavalry Group -- if they manage to cripple deBlasio, they may not get a pro union mayor next time. They should be looking into job alternatives for the drivers - they can still maintain their union. Any strong union supporter or member (as we are) should reach out to their union representatives and let them know you oppose what the Teamsters are doing. The Teamsters and the Central Labor Council are making a monumental mistake opposing deBlasio on this issue. This is a tiny industry - what is this all about Teamsters?
HORSES SPOOK - 6 HORSE INCIDENTS IN 10 DAYS NOT INCLUDING NYC
Horses do not belong in traffic between the shafts of a carriage
Horses are nervous prey animals and do not belong in traffic. People who know and truly care about horses know this well. It is only those who make money off their backs and exploit them who feel differently. The horses we see on the street pulling carriages weigh between 1,200 and 2,000 pounds on average. They can spook from the slightest provocation, bolt into traffic injuring or killing themselves or innocent passersby. In 2010, a tourist was trampled by a spooked carriage horse in Salzburg, Austria. She died from her injuries. Click here to see the list in the carriage drivers manual - p. 36. They include manhole covers, pot holes, umbrellas opening quickly, ambulance and police sirens, Looking through this manual, you will find that the drivers to not follow most of these regulations.
Politicians who favor this trade do not understand that they are putting people at risk. This is a list of the accidents that happened recently:
- Charleston - 4/22/14 - horse spooks and bolts; crashes into market
- Oklahoma - 4/22/14 - Horse spooks, carriage over turns injuring nine kids
- Belgium - 4/12/14 - 2,200 pound carriage horses spooks, slips and falls.
- Savannah - 4/14/14 - terrified carriage horse spooks and bolts; notice at the end of the video, passenger jumps from carriage and gets clothes caught
- Santa Barbra -4/15/14 - two men injured after carriage horses spooked and bolted, turning over carriage
- Cleveland - 4/18/14 - horse spooks, slips and falls; appears exhausted

WE ARE ADVERTISING IN METRO
please donate what you can for our advertising campaign
We will continue to run ads in Metro as long as we can.
you may donate here. Please remember we are all volunteer and do not take salaries. Every penny you donate is put back into the organization. We are the organization that began the "ban" campaign in 2006 and we plan to continue our ad campaign until this inhumane, unsafe and abusive trade is stopped. We are hoping Mayor deBlasio takes positive action soon.
Thanks to all of you who have donated to our campaign. It is much appreciated. This is from a new series Enough is Enough.
CONTACT THE MAYOR THROUGH THE INTERNET
tell him you want a ban not a phase out
For the last 8 months, there has been an onslaught by the media against the proposed carriage horse ban. The media has presented the issue from the carriage drivers' point of view. From Fox News to CNN and Channel 11 in NYC -- the Daily News, Post and NY Times. Even AM-NY. They have all lied with no shame.
Contact Mayor deBlasio - tell him that you want a ban of horse-drawn carriages THIS YEAR. If he delays it for three years or if there is another accident, it will hurt him politically. Tell him that you voted for him because he promised to ban the trade - and even on the first day he took office, which we knew was an impossibility. Now he has put a time frame on it until the end of the year. . Click Here. Please be respectful.
BOYCOTT RADIO STATION Q104.3
Carol Miller supports the Daily News campaign
Carol Miller, disc jockey from radio station Q104.3, is ignorantly promoting the NY Daily News Campaign and telling people that the horses will all die if Mayor deBlasio has his way. Is Carol really that stupid or did someone get to her? I believe someone got to Carol, because she once supported the electric cars, which at least seemed that she wanted to get the horses out of harm's way. The radio station is owned by right wing Clear Channel Communications.
We ask you to boycott this radio station in its entirety. Carol appears to be the only disc jockey taking this position, but the radio manager is allowing her to do so - which is why we are asking for a total boycott. You can also find out who the advertisers are for her program and contact them. Unfortunately, none of the other disc jockeys are supporting a ban publicly. Shame on all of them. Please listen to something else.
ATLANTA HORSE CARRIAGE TRADE INVESTIGATED BY ANIMALS ANGELS
Important - please share this
Animals Angels investigated the carriage horse trade in Atlanta, which revealed some not surprising findings. Click here for the report. Animals Angels reports: " The investigation showed that carriages are often overloaded with passengers and horses are forced to work with rubbing harnesses, causing sores to develop, fester, and become infected. Multiple horses with bleeding, open wounds were documented. "
This is the call to action.
We ask that you please respond to our CALL FOR ACTION. Contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture Equine Division and the Department of Taxicabs and Vehicles for Hire demanding that they increase inspections and perform their enforcement duties. The horses deserve better. They certainly deserve no less.
