Halloween Safety TipsThe Lake County Sheriff's Office has been working with residents, schools and the Highway Patrol to help prepare for a safe Halloween. Roadside Safety Check & Halloween PatrolsAlcohol and drug impairment are significant factors in over 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. To help keep residents safe, the Lake County Sheriff's Office will be implementing a roadside safety check and additional Halloween patrols. The Roadside Safety Check is scheduled for Oct. 25, 11 p.m. - 3 a.m. at an undisclosed area and is designed to keep the road safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road. Healthy Halloween TipsHalloween candy is fun for kids, but can be a struggle for parents who are concerned about a healthy diet for their children. It can be hard to make sure we all eat enough fruits and vegetables and avoid excessive sugars and saturated fat this time of year so remember to enjoy in moderation! 2014 Marine Unit Statistics
 The Lake County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit received a total of 917 calls for service, handled 12 accident reports, and responded to a record low of one fatality during the 2014 season. The Marine Unit also conducted 642 safety boardings, 568 traffic stops (resulting in 331 issued citations), 54 operating under the influence arrests, and conducted 84 business checks. During the season which ran from April to Oct. 11, the Marine Unit operated 4 days a week with a total of 15 Marine Unit Deputies despite being the coldest and wettest seasons in the last 10 years. This increased enforcement along with the responsibility of boat operators contributed to the safety on the waterways in Lake County this year, making this one of the lowest injury seasons dating back to 2007. Lake County Advances Sustainability with New Chapter in Regional Plan
 The Lake County Board recently adopted a Sustainability Chapter in the County's Regional Framework Plan that helps advance sustainability both inside county government and the broader community. The County received input from residents and various stakeholders in developing the plan. The extensive document covers topics such as land use and development, including preserving open space and protecting natural resources. It also addresses transportation and mobility, energy conservation, waste reduction, and more. Read the Sustainability Chapter. Collaborative Effort Underway to Improve Water Quality in the Des Plaines River Watershed - Watch County Update

Pace 2015 Proposed Budget Public HearingPace is currently holding public hearings for the proposed 2015 budget. For the sixth consecutive year, the budget is balanced without a fare increase or service reductions. Public hearing Oct. 30, 4-6 p.m., Waukegan Public Library. Metra 2015 Proposed Budget Public HearingMetra's 2015 budget proposal calls for fare increases of 10.8% next year and proposes additional increases totaling about 68% over the next decade. The proposed increases are needed to modernize its aging rail fleet and to pay for other costs of doing business. The Metra Board will vote on the proposal at their Nov. 14, Board Meeting Public hearing Nov. 5, Mundelein Village Hall, 4-6 p.m. Details on the 2015 budget and capital plan.
