Left to right: Dr. Azad Dadgar, Dr. Paul Stafford, and Delmar Gray
|
Dr. Paul Stafford, you may remember, is the man who was instrumental in Elba's recovery. He, Dr. Azad Dadgar, and their expert scrub tech, Delmar Gray, came from Orthopedic and Trauma Service of Oklahoma and St. John's Medical Center of Tulsa, Oklahoma on a service-learning partner trip.
The surgery team took the first steps in building a teaching/learning partnership with the hospital in León and are already planning their return visit. This time, they worked for a week with a team of Nicaraguan surgeons at the León Hospital and performed 10 surgeries.
They also worked with medical students from LECOM Bradenton and gave them their first look at the operating room!
A medical service-learning partner trip gives the people of Chacraseca much needed access to medical care and gives the students some real-life, hands-on experience with patients in a new context.
These trips are a part of JustHope's
partnership with DOCARE International and the Nicaraguan Ministry of Heath. We have been working together with the doctor at the small clinic to provide greater continuity of care to the community.
This year's Wine for Water will have special emphasis on Service-Learning and its impact on not only Nicaraguan communities, but also the impact these experiences have on our own communities through these young professionals. We hope you will be able to support and or attend the event! More info here.
