BLACK HISTORY INVENTIONS AND DISCOVERIES
Check out 36 Black History inventors and groundbreakers who left their mark in our collective history.
Nathaniel Alexander was the first to patent the folding chair. His invention was designed to be used in schools, churches and at large social gatherings.
Andrew Jackson Beard invented the "Jenny Coupler" in 1897, a device which allowed train cars to hook themselves together when they are bumped into one another. The device saved the lives of many railroad workers, who originally had the dangerous job of hooking the moving cars together by hand.
Henry Blair, the second African-American to receive a patent, invented a corn seed planter in 1834 and a cotton planter in 1836. Blair could not read or write and signed his patent with an X.

ANNIE GODBEE HONORED AS
LIGHTNING COMMUNITY HERO
The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Annie Godbee as the 21st Lightning Community Hero of the year at the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg this afternoon. Godbee, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg.
In 2011, Godbee spent more than 1,000 hours of her own free time volunteering, helping at-risk and low-income youth reach their full potential. A retired elementary school teacher, she participates in the YMCA's Y-Achievers program aimed at mentoring youth and supplying parents with homework, holding them accountable for their children's progress.
Godbee's goal is to open her arms to youth who face daily struggles and help them reach their life-long goals. She is always willing to help out others, even donating extra books and supplies to individual families in difficult situations. Godbee's ability to inspire through example has profoundly impacted the lives of countless families. She understands that the curriculum and the classroom are just the start to impacting academics and behavior.
