Greetings!
What's not to love about chairs?  We certainly Headshot Pink spend enough time in them.  Chairs weren't always as common place as they are now.  At one time it was only kings, dignitaries, and bishops that had their own chairs.  The more common seat was the bench, chest, or stool.  This symbol of authority is still used today, for example our committees, boards of directors, and academic departments all have a 'chairman' and endowed professorships are referred to as 'chairs'.

As is with most things that are meant to make our life easier it also debilitates us.  Our bodies are made to move and squat, our muscles are meant to be worked and stretched, and our bones were made to bear weight; sitting inhibits all of these things.

All chairs that is except yoga chairs. :-)  A yoga chair has the back taken out of it to encourage you to use the spine and abdominals to sit up.  They are made of metal and are used as an aide to deepen and enhance the experience of all types of asanas (poses).  Another advantage is that it allows everyone to be able to do yoga, even those with disabilities and injuries.

It is actually harder to do yoga on a chair because it gives you a spatial reference for your alignment so that you have less chance of unconsciously compensating while doing a pose.  It also supports you, giving you the potential to do poses you would not normally attempt.

So give it a try and do some yoga poses with a chair or try a Chair Yoga class.  You will be amazed at how challenging it really is!
Joke of the Week - hee hee

Can you think of a tagline to go with this cute picture?
Mantra
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation.  It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'.  Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week (from Louise Hay's 'Heal Your Body'). Just repeat it whenever you need a lift.

I am strong and flexible!

Yoga with a Chair
Yoga Poses with a ChairYoga is an adaptable modality to help all those you would like to improve their health.  You don't have to be able to put your foot behind your head since most of us wouldn't be able to practice yoga if we did! In fact you don't even have to be able to sit on the floor either!

It wasn't always this way though.  It wasn't until B.K.S. Iyengar began to incorporate props into the poses to heal himself from a dislocated spine that props began to be seen as a viable means to assist in getting into yoga poses.  They didn't even use yoga mats!

The chair is, in my humble opinion, the best yoga prop there is!  You can use the chair to assist you in every yoga pose.  It helps you to bring balance and ease into a pose that might otherwise be impossible.  It allows you to put more mindful effort into what you are doing because you are supported and can concentrate on the intricacies of your movements and your breath.  Also, it allows you to stay in a pose longer to reap its full benefits more succinctly.

Please clink on this link to access a book, A Chair For Yoga, written by Eyal Shifroni that you can download a short version of and save to view many different ways to use the chair in yoga as taught by Iyengar.  You can also click on the picture above and join me a sampling of some yoga poses you can do with a chair.  Enjoy and have fun!
Nutrition Prescription - Cherries
Cherries like many other fruits are packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals in the body and may help prevent cancer and heart disease, as well as slow the aging process.  Of course, eating cherries during winter months can be costly and challenging, so you can substitute cherry juice instead!

Cherries have three prime components that can help fight cancer: 1. Queritrin - a flavonoid--is rich in cherries, and has been found by researchers to be one of the most potent anticancer agents.

2. Ellagic acid - that some researchers say that ellagic acid may be the most effective way to prevent cancer.

3. Perillyl alcohol (POH) - researchers found that POH stops the growth of cancer cells by depriving them of the proteins they need to grow.  It has worked on every kind of cancer that POH has been tested against!

The anthocyanin and bioflavonoids in cherries also help eliminate migraine headaches, these compounds are known to have similar activity to aspirin and ibuprofen.

The antioxidant melatonin, which is also rich in cherries, is significant in improving the body's circadian rhythms and this will help you sleep better.  Since melatonin is found in small quantities in the body, a slight increase can produce great results!

There are so many delicious cherry recipes available (my favorite is cherry pie! Yum!) With all that this super food contains in its tiny package, you'll want to make sure you always keep this healthy snack well stocked in your kitchen.

Chairs
The definition of a chair is a separate seat for one person usually with a back and four legs.  This commonplace object, that we just rest our bottoms on, is often taken for granted.  As innocuous as it is, though, it has a rich history.  They were mainly used for the rich and famous and very ornately decorated.  The higher ranked an individual was, the taller and more sumptuous was the chair he sat on and the greater the honor. On state occasions the pharaoh sat on a throne, often with a little footstool in front of it.

Chairs from the medieval era were made of bronze, marble, or heavy oak and carved with scenes from the Bible and ordained with saints.  In fact the word chair comes from the Greek word 'kethedra' because most chairs were in the cathedrals for special celebrations or where the king held court.  We only know this because of paintings and sculpture because few chairs survived time.

It was in the Renaissance that the chair became more commonplace and a standard item of furniture in the home for anyone who could afford to buy one.  The chairs style changed every couple of years at that time to fit the women's styles of dresses.

It was our own illustrious Thomas Jefferson that invented the swivel chair.  It is said that he wrote the entire Declaration of Independence while sitting on this chair and enjoyed it so much that he had it sent to his home in Virginia.

Over 85 years ago in Monroe, Michigan, the La-Z-Boy was invented by two cousins who were following their American dream.  They created a reclining porch chair first, then when a store wouldn't purchase a 'seasonal' chair they upholstered it and it turned into an overnight sensation.

Just the opposite of the La-Z-Boy is our yoga chair.  The most commonly used chair for yoga studios is a standard metal folding chair that has had the back and the front rung removed to help the practitioner get in and out of poses more efficiently.  It can be used in a variety of yoga poses to aid those with injuries and/or chronic disabilities, and restorative poses.

Though it can be used in this way it is also used for getting into more advanced postures
as well.  The advanced practitioner commonly uses it as an aide to get into more difficult poses such as backbends like Dhanurasana (Bow Pose) or inversions like Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) as shown.

Begin to use the yoga chair to enhance your poses.  It doesn't have to be the metal chair described above, any chair available will do for most poses.  Just by reaching down to the ground while sitting on a chair will stretch the back body and open the hips in a way that does not occur when sitting on the ground.  Below you will find some suggestions on how to use the chair in yoga (just click on the blue words).  Check out the internet too.  You will find many good resources to help give you ideas on how to use the chair in yoga.  You really can sit to get fit!

Trying different things like using a chair for a prop in some of your poses may bring a whole different experience to the pose.  You might find that it is harder than you truly think.

See you in class!
Thank you!
Hugs and Namaste,

Debbie
