"There is a fine line between being overwhelmed and being challenged."
I read this quote when I was looking for ways to overwhelm my overwhelm with positive attitude. I can get down on myself when I have so much to do. My negative thoughts can take over when I feel as though I am being buried in an avalanche of undertakings. It's then that I just want to quit or run away from it all! "Calgon take me away!"
Since I don't really want to run away at those times I do a few 4-7-8 breaths. Breathe in for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. This simple action slows me down and stabilizes my thoughts; then I feel I can get a grip on the mountain of items on my to-do list. I feel so much better when I can begin to cross off the items as I get them done.
It helps me a lot to write things down in the morning, focusing my attention on what I want to accomplish for that day. Sometimes there is just so much that I want to accomplish in one day that I have to laugh at my to-do list. I know that there is just no way it's all going to happen in one day! So I prioritize, picking the top three items that need to get done and then focusing on each, one at a time.
That's why I could empathize with little Stan, the bee up above, breaking things down into small bits makes things much more manageable and a lot less overwhelming!
When you are feeling overwhelmed, one trick is in taking demanding situations and working with them, instead of denying or resisting them. Being grateful for the unknown lessons and blessings that you are receiving from them. Welcoming the challenges with a strong, open heart, and treating ourselves with kindness and care, allows our power to slowly return and hidden blessings begin to reveal themselves. In so doing you get things done one at a time, and you begin to see how simply brilliant and strong you truly are.

| Mantra | |
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation. It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'. Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week (from Louise Hay's 'Heal Your Body'). Just repeat it whenever you need a lift.
I lovingly accept my decisions, knowing I am free to change. I am safe. |

How To Get Yourself To Do A Home Yoga Practice
|
When you are trying to start a yoga practice at home are you overwhelmed as to how to proceed? Do you then just give up on the idea all together?
Like everything else sometimes it's just our perspective that needs to change, and breaking things down into smaller bits, the same goes for your yoga practice.
There are some maneuvers you can use to fool yourself into doing a home yoga practice. One is to have a dedicated space where you can have your yoga mat laying out all the time. If that is not possible then lay out your mat when you have the intention to do yoga. The next step is to put on your yoga clothes, that way you can do yoga as soon as you consider it.
Usually what happens to me when I am wanting to do my practice is that as soon as I step on my mat I think of a number of other things that I have to do. So I make a deal with myself...I must do one yoga pose with thoughtfulness and then I can go and do that thing, but I must come back to the mat and do another pose before I start anything else. Soon everything gets done and I can spend my time just doing yoga.
Begin to think of ways that you can entice yourself to doing a yoga practice during your week. What works for you? And then begin doing it. A little at a time and soon you will have formed a new habit and deepened your love for your yoga practice. Then you won't ever want to be without it!
Check out the video above for some other ideas on how to get yourself to do yoga at home.

Nutrition Prescription - Moringa
|
Approximately 15% of the worlds' population is malnourished. Those numbers are overwhelming, especially when you understand that most of those numbers represent children. There is hope from something that I have never even heard about, the Moringa Tree. Curiously (or perhaps not so curiously) this tree grows right where it is needed the most!
One of the problems though is that many don't even know that the trees that surround them can help feed them too!
It is being called the Miracle Tree because its leaves are so nutrient dense that it can be used as a sole food source. They can be dried and powdered for future use and don't require refrigeration. They are also used to feed livestock healthfully. It also goes by the name of The Mother Tree because it has helped so many pregnant women in Africa have easier deliveries and their babies are born healthier too.
Another sad and overwhelming fact is that over two million people die every year from diseases thought to come from contaminated water, the majority are children under the age of 5. The Moringa tree is again the answer. Amazingly, it's seeds can be crushed and used to purify water into a safe, drinkable source.
Every aspect of this life-giving tree is usable in some way to help sustain and nourish the people that need it the most. The leaves, flowers, and buds can be eaten raw or cooked, the seedpods can be eaten like green beans (immature stage) or okra (mature stage).
Not only are the seeds usable to purify water but also contain an oil that can be used for lubrication (such as machinery), cosmetic creams, soaps, cooking, and to burn in lanterns because it doesn't smoke. One mature tree can provide up to 200 - 300 pounds of seeds!
There is a children's book about this magnificent tree, and many videos on YouTube, such as this one:
The trees themselves provide shade, erosion control, can be used as a living fence and, when combined with vining plants become a windbreak and/or privacy screen. It is an extremely fast growing tree (10 - 15' feet per year). The wood is not strong enough to use to build homes but is a good source of fuel for wood stoves and such.
This sustainable resource also offers marketable fair trade commodities that can help sustain families and whole communities. The most important fair trade marketable item is Moringa tea. This is a flavorful, healthy, environmentally friendly drink. This tea has a natural, spicy flavor, either hot or iced, and can be made into speciality flavors as well. Don't just drink the tea though, open the bag and add the contents to soups or stews to get the full benefit of the leaves.
Do be careful when purchasing moringa online as some of the products may not be pure Moringa nor organic. I saw that the Vitamin Shoppe sells it and the health food stores in the area also carry it in powder or pill form. If you are interested check it out and see which one is suitable for you. I'm going to try it out to see if it will help with my eyesight, as it is being tested in India to help with blindness because of it's high Vitamin A content. I'll keep you posted on the results. Let me know about yours. Enjoy!
A big Thank you to Char Tara for telling me about Moringa!

Ponderings - Overwhelm
|
 | |
by Jessica Swift
|
Everyone has a limited capacity for stress, and we all face challenges that temporarily put us over that limit. Overwhelm can be one of those stressors that puts us in a place where we are almost mentally paralyzed and incapacitated so that we cannot make a decision. When that happens then there is no action, we try to ignore what needs to be addressed (it's called attentional blindness), and focus on rote, daily
practices that requires no thought. Check out this fun short video that tests your ability to notice things:
If we can step back, move away from the situation, and view it from a distance then we separate from the thought, judgement, and labeling of overwhelm and can see it from the heart. When we see things from the heart we begin to see ourselves as human. We give ourselves a break and treat ourselves a little more kindly. We can begin to see the energy of our planned future actions and how they will affect ourselves and others and can begin to direct this energy in the most beneficial way to complete our to-do list.
One beautiful way to do this that I read on Your Courageous Life is to begin to say "Thank You". By showing gratitude for all events in your life, both good and difficult, shows a deeply courageous trust that everything will be all right, an acknowledgment that this situation is temporary. It brings you out of the moment of overwhelm, allows you to calm down, and begin to see a solution or action you can take.
I was listening to an interview while typing this article and there was a perfect line in it for this very topic. It was an interview with Sylvia Boorstein on the website On Being
(March 29, 2012) where she mentions how she talks to herself during troublesome situations in her life by saying: "Sweetheart, you're in pain. Relax. Take a breath. Let's pay attention to what is happening, and then we'll figure out what to do." When I heard that it was a 'Wow' moment, to have such consideration for yourself, to nourish yourself, and to give yourself a respite from negative self-talk was enheartening to me and gave me a precedent to do the same for myself.
So the next time you want to shout: "Wait! Stop! It's all too much!", instead of becoming overwhelmed, begin to take steps to emerge from it. Breathe, step back, write things down, and most of all be benevolent towards yourself. You'll find that you begin to enjoy everyone, everything, and your life so much more as you begin to accomplish what you set out to do and move forward into your life.

Isn't this world that we live in amazing? If we look we can see that there is inherent healing all around us in nature and in ourselves. At times we can get so overwhelmed with what our mind perceives to be lack: of time, resources, energy, hope. Begin to realize that it is just that...a perception. Begin to change that and you will begin to once again see with clarity that you are very powerful. Start taking baby steps now and you will achieve what it is you seek.
Thank you!
