Our world is in a constant state of hurry-scurry.  You don't need me to tell you of the round-the-clock scramble that we live in everyday.  In the past I found myself always lamenting of how "I don't have enough time!".  Then one day I heard myself saying it.  Boing! - a light bulb went off in my head!  I'm creating this perceived lack of time for myself!  It was then and there that I changed my attitude about time.  I started telling myself "I have enough time to do everything I want and need to do".  It was amazing!  The peace and calm that came over me at that moment.  By experiencing a moment for itself, it felt like I had stopped time.  I felt myself breathing and being present.  It happened in an instant!  Then I began to tackle the pile on my desk with different eyes, less anxiety, and more organization.  I began to look at time as a commodity which was endless and available to me.  I relaxed and got more done that day than ever before.  Now when I find myself stressing over deadlines, desires, and duties I tell myself "You have time" and I always do.

Every pose in yoga requires the use of your feet, even if you are upside-down with your feet in the air.  Your feet are connected, through fascia (the fabric of the body) to the very top of your head.  If the feet are not active in a pose the whole body loses an important action that brings resilience and energy to it.

Most especially you want to work the muscles of the feet.  To do this get the toes moving as independently as possible.  Lift the arches of the feet by pressing down (or out) through the three anatomical points of support (ball of the big toe, ball of the little toe, and heel) as you lift the arch of the foot to create a pyramid-type action in the foot.

Just by doing this maneuver with mindfulness and effort you will begin to bring an 'aliveness' to the body.  It will help to realign the foot, knee, and hip, and it will help to relieve lower back pain.

So kick off your shoes, take the time to get your feet working.  Do some yoga at home, join a class if you haven't yet, and work those toes, lift those arches, even when you are sitting at a desk.  You'll begin to feel the difference in a very short time.
Mantra
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation.  It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'.  Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week (from Louise Hay's 'Heal Your Body').  Just repeat it whenever you need a lift.

I handle all my experiences with wisdom, with love, and with ease.

Rib-Tickler of the Week - hee hee

My wife, a professor of medicine, has published five books.  After she'd written her latest one, I stopped at the market to buy some chocolate and champagne.
"Are you celebrating something?" asked the clerk as he bagged my items.
"Yes', I replied proudly, "My wife just finished a book."
He paused a moment, "Slow reader?"

Nutrition Prescription - Say NO to Plastic
This article is not about a food, rather it is about what we use to carry, store, and package our food in.

Plastic really helps to make our lives so convenient.  It doesn't break when dropped, it holds liquid, it's light and portable, and can be molded into an endless array of shapes and sizes.  It is used in every industry and helps to unburden our ecological system of sustaining us by using natural materials.  Because it is light weight it doesn't require as much fossil fuel to transport.  There are many beneficial uses for plastics.

Yet at the same time it is killing us and destroying our earth.  Ocean's Garbage Patches

Upon closer look it is not really that plastic is bad, rather it is in how we use plastic that is detrimental to us.  Primarily because many times we use it for one-time purposes that make our throw-away lifestyle so convenient.  So what can we do to make it better?

There are many things you can do.  Granted, it does require extra effort, but it is worth it for better health and to lend a hand in aiding nature (and us) to survive.

1.)  Use glass to store your food in.  It's been known that plastics contain harmful chemicals which leech into your foods as they are being stored in them or microwaved.  For most of the glass bowls (like Pyrex) that are available, you will still be using a plastic lid to keep them closed but it has less contact with your food.

2.)  Don't buy bottles of water.  Carry your own water in glass or stainless steel containers (though the glass ones are covered in plastic to protect the glass from breaking if dropped, at least it is not getting into your water).

3.)  Cloth sandwich baggies are more readily available, though they require washing.  Again it's worth it.  Or use Abeego.

4.)  Carry a stainless steel straw with you so you don't have to use the plastic ones.  It's a little thing that adds up because straws are one of the biggest offenders in beach cleanups.

5.)  The biggest help you can do is to carry your own bags or baskets to the market to bring your food home in.

6.)  Ask your dry cleaner not to cover your clothes with plastic.  If you need to cover your clean clothes bring a traveling garment bag to cover them with.

7.)  Purchase items in your grocery store that are packaged in paper (or cardboard) instead of plastic.

8.)  RECYCLE, RE-cycle, reeeee-cycle!  Please.

9.)  Don't use those plastic six-pack holders (or at least cut through all of the circles).

10.)  Here's a shocker.  Stop chewing gum...it's plastic.  Who knew?

Plastic will forever be a part of our lives.  We can use it to do much good for us and the world (it's used in solar panels) but it lasts for eternity, it doesn't break down like natural products do, so we need to begin to look at how we use it.  In what small way can you begin the change away from plastic?  It's something to think about.

Ponderings - Time
"We don't have enough time to do everything we want to do, but we have enough time to do everything we are called to do." ~Josh Irby

We all have the same amount of time.  In one week there is the same 7 days, 168 hours, 10,080 minutes, 604,800 seconds for all of us.  So why does it seem that some people can get so much more done than others?  It's their attitude about time.

For many of us we spend most of our time at our jobs.  The key is to have a job you love, something you would do even if you weren't being paid to do it.  'If you love what you do you'll have more energy for the rest of your life too' says the book  168 Hours:  You Have More Time Than You Think by Laura Vanderkam.  Loving what you do gives you a positive attitude towards living that can spread into the other areas of your life too.  This is one of the most powerful ways to give you the energy you need to do all you would like to do.

Sometimes we use not having enough time as an excuse.  There may be projects that we don't really want to do, or chores that we are avoiding, or even people who we don't want to spend time with and we are using the lack of time as an excuse rather than facing up to the hidden truth.  It's not always easy to say 'No' to someone, or face up to what's really bugging us about something.  It requires us to look deeper inside ourselves and that can be scary.  Take the time to do this though and you'll begin to remove a lot of obstacles that are keeping you from living the life you want.  Stop using time as an excuse.

Time is a limited resource.  When you value the time you have you'll find that you use it for the things that you value.  What is your priority in life, what are your dreams, what is important to you?  That is what you will focus your time on.  Unfortunately for many of us we fritter our life away by watching TV / movies / sports, Facebooking (is that a word?), or playing games on our various electronic items.  All the while having that niggling feeling that we are missing something, that there should be something more.  What about working towards your dream(s), taking risks by doing that special something that you are being called to do?  Begin to value your time and use it to follow your inspirations.

Here is an interesting study that describes how scientists discovered that people who used their time to help others felt like they had more time to get things done.  "It's not so much how much time you have," says Harvard Business School's Michael Norton, "as how you feel about what you can get done in the time that you do have."  Doing something that makes you feel good, that helps someone else, makes you feel like you have all the time in the world to get things done.

Time (or the perceived lack of it) is not what is keeping you from reaching your goals.  We all have the same amount of time; it's how we use it, how we appreciate it, and how we realize that it is a gift given to all of us, equally -- no favorites.  Each day is a daily gift of time for which to be grateful for.  So begin to tell yourself "I have all the time I need to get things done".  And you will.

My relationship with time is always changing and evolving.  There are times when I sit and do nothing and times when my day is filled with activity.  Now-a-days I see the value in both.  It has helped me to create boundaries, figure out what is important to me, and honor the time that I have here on earth.  I'm lucky in that I love the work that I do and it includes helping people feel better too.  Begin to look at time differently.  All that really belongs to us is time, it's how we serve it that makes it wasted or worthwhile.
Namaste,
Debbie
