Yoga Salutes Non-Violence
Please support Yoga Salutes Non-Violence at The Yoga Center of Columbia on November 3, 2012.  All proceeds go to various Domestic Violence Centers in our area.

Sybil Malatras is organizing tag-teams of Gentle Yogis who would like to participate in this successful event at a slower pace.  You can do as many sun salutations as you want!  Get friends/family to sponsor you, or just donate.

There are practice sessions each Saturday of October at 2:15 p.m. for 45 minutes so that you can get into the rhythm of the practice.

Everyone will get a free towel to commemorate your achievement!  You will feel good supporting this admirable cause and yourself in your practice!

Greetings!
headshot1Have you ever heard the phrase 'Man plans, and God laughs'?  Sometimes we have the best intentions, make plans so that everything goes smoothly and then  - road blocks!  Unforeseeable events are placed in your path and nothing seems to work out as you had it planned! Grrrr!  When this happens what comes up for you? Anger, anxiety, discord from deep within?  How do you handle this? How to deal with this emotional turmoil that seems to take you over?  (Story continues below in Ponderings)...
Rib-Tickler of the Week - hee hee
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving isn't for you.

Sorry.  Here's another:

Q)  Why didn't the turkey cross the road?
A)  Because he wasn't chicken!               HA!
Mantra
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation.  It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'.  Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week (from Louise Hay's 'Heal Your Body').  Just repeat it whenever you need a lift.

I am always in control of my thoughts.
I am safe.  I love and approve of myself.

Nutrition Prescription - Niacin (Vitamin B3)
Chocolate
Niacin is one of the eight B vitamins that are water soluble so the body does not store them.  Niacin deficiency is rare though because we can get it through our diet easily.  Alcoholism is the main cause of niacin deficiency in the US.

Niacin is also known as Vitamin B3.  It is involved in over 50 metabolic processes that are meant to turn carbohydrates into energy.  Primarily the reason I want to discuss it is because it is so beneficial in aiding in depression, which is epidemic these days.  Niacin Benefits for Depression

Most interesting is the story of how Bill Wilson, creator of AA, swore that this vitamin was a catalyst in improving his own health issues and wanted to use it as part of the treatment for AA.  (DoctorYourself: Niacin).

Niacin also is reported to lower cholesterol and trigly-ceride levels while increasing the HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

It aids in atherosclerosis by the way of the histamine it produces which is capable of dilating blood vessels.  This means it is also helpful in blood circulation problems.

Niacinamide is a form of niacin that can be used to prevent diabetes and aids in the delay of having to use insulin.

Vitamin B3 helps in joint mobility making it a great asset in promoting healing in the treatment of osteoarthritis.  It also has an anti-inflammatory effect to help in rheumatoid arthritis.

Niacin does have a flushing side effect (over 50 mg) where the face and chest has a sudden redness and burning / tingling feeling.  It is therefore recommended to start off with a low dosage and steadily increase it overtime.  (Niacin Dosage)

Niacin can be found in many foods:  beets, brewer's yeast, organ meats, eggs, fish, peanuts, and sunflower seeds.  Breads and cereals are fortified with it.

Always talk to your health care provider before adding any type of supplementation because of their potential interactions with other drugs.

More Yoga Foot Poses
The fascia of our body is a matrix of connective tissue from the the tips of our toes to the top of our head.  One of the best ways to release fascia yourself is by using a tennis ball and gently pressing onto it as I demonstrate in this video.  Lying on the floor and placing a tennis ball on (or near) a painful area can often times help relieve the soreness too.

Since the whole body is connected when you relax one area of the body it has an overall effect.  Here we work with the feet once more.  Since we can see them and reach them easily (hopefully) they are simple to work with in releasing fascia.  Most often they are the most abused part of the body and so respond immediately to any kindness that is offered to them.

The first pose I discuss is the Thai Goddess / Vajrasana interplay.  These poses really get the toes to bend and become independent of the foot.  Getting the toe joints to release will stretch the plantar fascia (preventing plantar fasciitis) and bring freedom to the whole lower leg.  The second is the Tennis Ball Press where you can literally feel an instantaneous release of fascia.

Having healthy feet leads to having a healthy body.  Take the time to give yourself (and your feet) a treat.  You'll feel more relaxed and grounded when you do.
Ponderings - Go with the Flow
Do you:
  • push to make things happen even when they aren't working out?
  • ignore the little 'clues' and stick to your plans instead of adjusting to the circumstances?
  • ever watch yourself act like a complete imbecile, so much so that you didn't even like yourself, but just couldn't stop yourself?
Sometimes there isn't anything you CAN do except ride it out until it is over.  Then after-wards:  Stop, Breathe, Review, and Learn from the experience.

We all go through times such these but it is what we do with the lessons that make them either beneficial or detrimental to our life experience.  Do you learn from these episodes or do you blame or criticize (yourself or others), and feel beaten down like a victim to circumstance?

It's when we are confronted with obstacles that we learn to become skilled in acquiring and mastering the artistry of how to go with the flow of life.  Life is tumultuous and traumatic for sure.  When you are in the middle of it all can you stay connected to your center, hear your inner voice, and go with the flow?

It isn't always easy because when we are in the midst of it our first response to No is "NO!" Digging in our heels and resisting.  This only makes things even harder.  So here are some suggestions that might help when first faced with an obstacle:

1.  Relax, soften the back of your heart.
2.  Notice your breath, then breathe deeply and steadily.
3.  Feel your feet or hips, whatever is touching the ground or chair, and become heavy.
4.  Observe the present moment you are in.
5.  Surrender and ask for guidance from within.
6.  Act on an alternative way to achieve your goal or let it go.
7.  Smile, knowing that you are following the path that is best for you.

The more you practice this method the easier it becomes and soon it becomes automatic.  I'm still working on mastering this and at times I still totally lose it all together.  I forgive myself and start over again.

Like Winston Churchill said "Never, never, never give up!".  Keep working at it.  It is SO worth it.

We are spiritual beings having a human experience which is full of flaws, upsets, and lessons, just as much as it is full of joys, blessings, and love.  What makes the difference is how you see things and your attitude towards it.  See it as an opportunity to raise your level of consciousness or see it as a source of pain, it is up to you.  Go with the flow!
The definition of flowing is:  free, aerodynamic, graceful (among other adjectives).  These all give the picture of what it means to be in the stream of life.  Everything becomes easier; there is no struggle.  When you listen to your inner voice, or see that obstacles may actually be just gentle nudges in the right direction, you begin to stop fighting and do what is right for you.  Then everyone around you can do what is right for them.  So you really allow others to be their authentic selves when you become authentic.  Now that is an inspiration to follow!
Namaste,
Debbie
