                       April 14, 2015

April has long been a month during which organizations work to raise awareness of the need to focus on financial literacy education. In 2011, when President Obama officially proclaimed it National Financial Literacy Month, he remarked that, as the nation recovers from the worst economic crisis in generations, it is critical that we understand the consequences of our financial decisions. In fact, the CEEE believes that personal finance education should be a required portion of every K-12 student's study.

Perhaps not as well known is that April is also National Volunteer Month, dedicated to honoring and encouraging volunteers in our communities. We are fortunate to have so many organizations and individuals who contribute valuable time and considerable expertise toward our work. We would like to thank you for your support and encourage you to continue engaging in meaningful volunteer activities. We certainly could not do what we do without your help.

O'Neill Receives Multiplier Award

The inaugural James O'Neill Economic Education Multiplier Award was recently presented to its namesake at the National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) annual meeting, held in San Antonio in February.  Jim was honored for exemplary service to economic education nationally, having founded the respected Master of Arts in Economics and Entrepreneurship for Educators degree in 1981.  Refining this program for more than three decades, Jim helped build a national network of educators, each formally trained to teach other teachers.  The program will be graduating its 400th student this spring.  All have gone on to "be the multiplier," becoming agents of change in economic education in their own regions.  This award will be presented annually at the NAEE conference to a member best embodying Jim's passion, reach and effectiveness.  Information on nominating future recipients can be found at  http://www.naee.net/awardoneill.shtml

 Jump$tart Highlights Keys Research

The winter edition of the Jump$tart Coalition newsletter has featured the Keys to Financial Success high school personal finance curriculum, citing research supporting its effectiveness.

Research was authored by Carlos Asarta, Bonnie Meszaros and UD alumnus Andrew Hill.  Keys is produced by the CEEE in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

Financial Fitness for Families

Students and their families learned how to budget, save and make choices as they played board games called "Race to Save," "Can You Buy It?" and "Piggy Bank Problems" at Community Nights held at Stubbs Elementary School on January 28 and February 24. More than 400 parents and children participated in the grade-appropriate activities that challenged the students to apply math skills learned in the classroom to develop money management skills.

The families received copies of activities to reinforce the math and financial skills at home that they practiced at the Community Nights. A grant from TD Charitable Foundation supported the family programs at Stubbs Elementary School.

Topical Seminar Series

Last month, 17 secondary teachers participated in a seminar that focused on how the Fed regulates the money supply to achieve three objectives - measured economic growth, full employment and price stability.  Led by Dr. Andrew Hill, economic education advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the seminar explored the idea that although the Fed possesses powerful tools to influence the direction of the economy, it is difficult to determine with complete accuracy the timing, size and effectiveness of these tools.

To assist teachers in sharpening their students' understanding of monetary policy, Dr. Hill modeled three lessons from the Council for Economic Education's current edition of High School Economics. One of the lessons, Gigantic $100,000 Bill, is a classroom simulation that explains how the fractional reserve system increases and decreases banks' ability to lend, affecting the money supply in the economy.

On April 29, Professor James Butkiewicz, Chair of the Economics Department at the University of Delaware, will lead a seminar on economic growth followed by a related lesson from the Council for Economic Education's current edition of High School Economics. Teachers are invited to register on Eventbrite for the seminar, which will be held at the Duncan Center in Dover.
