STRUCTURAL MOMENTS...

The recent economic news about the U.S. construction industry have been increasingly positive. Although Nevada may be lagging in the speed of recovery, as compared to other states, the resumption of construction to complete several stalled projects in Las Vegas is an encouraging sign for what lies ahead. The ConExpo, which was held in Las Vegas early this month, serves as another gauge for the health of the industry. This year's Expo validated the welcome news and positive future trends.

The Las Vegas Convention Center, which is the biggest in the U.S., was not large enough for the ConExpo. Exhibits spread out into adjacent parking lots and nearby hotel space. The nearly 130,000 attendees were positive about the recovery of the industry. There is a general feeling of less economic and market uncertainty this year. Companies are gearing up by adding more skilled labor, new trucks, replacing outdated equipment and investing in training to be best positioned to capture the growth this year.

Do you share the same feeling about the future outlook? Do you agree that 2014 and 2015 will be busy years for us in the design and construction industry? Mohammed

The design, specifications and construction of high-quality concrete slab-on-ground must include some of the following important considerations:
  • Slab design load types such as distributed, rack post, and lift truck loading.
  • Expected performance and serviceability such as for moisture-sensitive flooring materials.
  • Site specific issues and local market construction practices.
  • Soil condition, soil support capacity and specification of appropriate concrete mix.
  • Shrinkage, slab edge curling, preparation, placing and finishing.
  • Crack control joint placement and spacing and construction joint detailing to allow movement.
  • Reinforcing options such as conventional deformed rebar, welded wire fabric and fibers.
  • Slab contribution to sustainability in the design and construction of the overall projects.

THOMAD Engineering has extensive experience in the design of slab-on-grade as part of a variety of projects over the past 10 years.
