STRUCTURAL MOMENTS...

Architects, engineers and builders make the world a better place to live in. They play an important role in creating safe, beautiful and sustainable structures which shape the communities in which we live.

In its latest design competition, The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) selected a new cable-supported pedestrian bridge to be the winner. Located in a remote area of the Andes in Bolivia, the Chari Chari Bridge was built with local labor and materials. This simple and yet elegant cable suspended footbridge has immensely improved life for people in that region. Spanning 520 feet, this bridge makes it possible for children and adults to avoid walking miles every day, out of their way, to find a safe point to cross a dangerous river which floods frequently.

The Chari Chari Bridge was made possible by the assistance of a group of engineers and other partners who help people living in poor regions with challenging terrain by constructing pedestrian bridges. Their contribution deserves to be recognized and applauded. They inspire us to give back whenever and wherever we can.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE NEW CODE ?

It is time for us to start learning a new building code again.

The 2012 edition of the International Building Code (IBC) is the latest version that has been already adopted by all Southern Nevada jurisdictions on August 20, 2013.

The use of the IBC 2012 becomes mandatory on the effective date of July 7, 2014. In the meantime, during this transition period, new projects can be designed under either the current 2009 IBC or the new 2012 IBC.

Amendments to the code have been already adopted and published by Southern Nevada Building Officials (S.N.B.O.). The document is now available online for public use and can be downloaded from the link below.

The IBC incorporates the 2010 edition of "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE/SEI 7 (ASCE 7-10)". Each of the materials chapters (Steel, Concrete, Masonry, Reinforcing Steel, Wood, Etc.) also incorporate the corresponding standards (AISC, ACI, Etc.) by referencing those standards.

Here are a couple of documents for your learning pleasure:

During this transition period, until July 7, 2014 when the new code becomes effective, which edition is best for your project? Call THOMAD Engineering to discuss.
