STRUCTURAL MOMENTS...

Greetings!

A mixed sense of excitement, anticipation and anxiety is in the air. We are in graduation season!. Awards nights, graduation ceremonies and parties are in full swing. While college graduates are entering the job market, high school seniors are about to begin a new chapter in life that will define their futures and careers.

My son will graduate from high school next month and begin his college education in the fall. He will join his sister who is a college junior. A good college education turned out to be the most valuable gift my parents ever gave to me. The best way to pay them back is to give the same gift to their grandchildren.

I believe that a college education teaches us how to learn on our own. It prepares us to enter the 'real world' with a concrete foundation to build on. The better the education, the stronger the foundation and the higher we can go later in life, just like when a building foundation is designed to support future growth.

However, no college education alone can adequately prepare us for any job and guarantee success. A strong personal desire to continue learning on the job while gaining experience and acquiring new skills will ensure success and growth. Graduation should be just the beginning of a life
long
journey of continuous learning. Regardless of where we are in our life Mohammed or career path, we should make education a top priority for ourselves and our children.

Best regards,

Featured Project: Roseman University of Health Sciences Research Laboratory

Roseman University The Roseman University of Health Sciences is expanding their campus in Henderson, Nevada by adding a new laboratory facility for medical research.

An existing warehouse building is being converted and renovated to serve as the new facility and provide for the university's future expansion needs. It will include several large research laboratories, offices and conference space at the first floor and the addition of a new 19,000 SF second floor inside the existing warehouse building, as a flexible space for future use. Construction is nearly complete and the facility will open soon on schedule and within budget.

Design-build general contractor Martin Harris teamed up with PGAL as architect and THOMAD Engineering as the structural engineer to deliver the project. Our engineers performed a rigorous structural analysis of the existing building and determined the majority of the existing structural members had enough reserve capacity to support the new floor addition. The existing tilt up concrete walls and steel columns were used to support the new floor. Although this design approach required additional engineering effort, it ultimately proved valuable by reducing construction materials, labor time and the overall project cost.

The limited available headroom presented a special structural challenge. However, the new floor structure was ultimately designed to meet deflection requirements, accommodate the ME&P systems and still maintain an acceptable ceiling height. Penetrations through existing walls for exiting and in the concrete slab and roof structure were designed for the addition of a new elevator.
