Vice Chancellor Ginger Waters was recently honored with two distinguished service awards. On March 8th, Touro College recognized her with its Women of Valor award, which is given to women who have made a significant contribution to society. Notable previous recipients of this award include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Muriel F. Siebert, the first woman to own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. On March 15th, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education bestowed on Vice Chancellor Waters its annual Frank W. Hale Distinguished Service Award. Frank W. Hale was a former vice provost for minority affairs at Ohio State University who dedicated his career and life to civil rights and improving the human condition, and is remembered as a tireless crusader for diversity in higher education during his 54-year legacy of service. This award honors individuals who have distinguished themselves in higher education by serving as a visionary in the field of diversity, exercising innovative and courageous leadership, and by contributing substantially to diversity, equity and inclusive excellence in higher education.
In accepting NADOHE's award, Vice Chancellor Waters stated:
"While the Chief Diversity Officer job is in many ways more complex than it was when I began this journey, it is also more integral to the fabric of the academy. The one key lesson I've learned is that to be successful in this field, you must cultivate allies. I could not do what I do without the support of the top leadership of the University and our Board of Trustees, who have taken a keen interest in our Diversity Action Plan and its results."
