FABULOUS FRAGRANCE AND TANTALIZING TROPICALS AT MINTERS

Now that summer has finally arrived, we are looking forward to spending more time outside in the garden
and on the deck. For many gardeners that means enjoying all that we have worked very to achieve. Color, texture, structure and movement are certainly vital elements to a great flower garden. Yet the importance of fragrance is often overlooked; fragrance can become the fabric that ties together all the other elements and helps bring ambiance and that special magic to your garden.
One of our favorite plants might well be the worlds most fragran
t plant, the Night Blooming Jessimine, sometimes called La Dama de Noche. (cestrum nocturnum). This tropical plant comes to life in the warm summer evenings. Its almost hypnotic perfume will float throughout your garden, and possibly even the neighborhood, delighting the senses.
Another favorite is the magnificent Brugmansia, in bloom now and continuing to blossom all summer. Huge downward facing blooms are amazing in their size and fragrance. Is this really Seattle?
Keep these prized specimens in containers and when cared for properly in the fall, you will enjoy them year after year!
A fanciful perennial is gladiolus calliathanus (acidanthera),
also known as fragrant
gladiolus or sword lily. With good drainage and full to part sun, this perennial will provide years and years of fabulous sweet fragrance to your garden. A must too are the oriental lilies (lilium Orientals), with marvelous fragrance and great beauty, they are one of the most sought after flowers in bouquets. Standing 3 feet tall, they work well in both formal and English style gardens.
Chocolate, chocolate fragrance? Two of our favorites are
perennials; Chocolate Flower (Berlandiera lyrata) and Chocolate Cosmos
(Cosmos atrosanguineus). With a strong chocolate scent, especially in the morning, the yellow, almost dandelion looking chocolate flower is actually considered an herb and could be used in salads and garnishings.
The amazing Chocolate Cosmos looks the part. Don't eat this one. Dark and stately, every garden should have it. Blooming June through September, it will winter over in a garden with lots of organic mulch. Its enticing fragrance peaks in the afternoon. ( You might want to try our Cocoa Mulch for an added touch)

We have a great selection of
scented geraniums that would be fabulous in the fragrant garden. Choose from rose, citronella, peppermint, vanilla, cinnamon and more. Bring cuttings inside for the winter window sill. Often forgotten, are the
lemon scented marigolds
(both are still available and on sale too!).
Roses, Remember the Roses! There are many
other plants that offer great fragrance. These are but few.

Consider fragrance as an essential garden element. Be masterful with fragrance. We are fortunate to be living where we can be tantalized throughout the summer with a great array of tropical, perennial and annual fragrant plants that will entrance us and can give us an awesome garden experience.
