Jeff addresses the crowd at this morning's Open House.
I was fortunate enough to spend part of this morning speaking with more than 40 potential Burgundy families who visited for an open house and a tour, led by current parents and students. (Thanks to all of you who help with our open houses and tours!) It's always an honor to speak to prospective parents, and when I do I recall my own first visit to Burgundy. There's a real sense of enchantment as one enters the Burgundy campus for the first time. How many times have I heard a parent or prospective parent admit: "My first or second thought was, 'I wish I could have gone to school like this!'" There was added excitement for today's open house group with the bold new construction of the Outdoor Classroom and Discovery Playground emerging in an already unique Burgundy landscape.

Speaking of excitement, as I explained to students at Wednesday's All School Meeting, the Fall Fair is almost here! Even as we are in the final stages of our first phase of Campus Renewal construction, the Blacktop will be cleared for the Fair, and the Fair will be the full experience it always is. The new playground will be nearing completion but will not be open yet for use, and the construction areas will remain fenced off. Look for an email next week with reminders and information for the Fair. Most important, proceeds from the Fall Fair benefit student financial aid! Therefore, I hope you will volunteer your time, donate items to our sales, and purchase your activity tickets with that in mind.

Both the Fall Fair and Campus Renewal projects grow out of a commitment to our mission. (It's front and center on Burgundy's homepage for easy review.) A diverse community is central to who we are as a school at Burgundy. Our Fall Fair supports a socioeconomically diverse learning community. The Outdoor Classroom and Discovery Playground project speaks to our commitment to maintaining a creative campus and learning environment that engages the whole child.

Burgundy is an exciting place to be, and even more so this fall! I am proud to be a steward of our Founder's vision. Thank you for being part of the Burgundy family, and thank you for your commitment to and support of our campus and community.

Sincerely,

alumniFall Fair: Alumni Reconnection
Calling all Burgundy alumni! This year's Alumni Reconnection at the Fall Fair will be in the Library, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. We ask alumni to stop by, visit, fill out an update form and submit it for a raffle drawing. This year's prize will be a $50 Visa gift card along with a generously donated basket of fall produce from
Groundworks Farm, owned by alumni Margaret Evans Brown '02 and Kevin Brown '01. This year's drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m., following the alumni photo at 1 p.m. outside the Library. Parents of alumni, please encourage your child(ren) to stop by and register for the drawing and be a part of the photo. We have a goal of seeing 100 alumni at the Fair this year!

New Sibling Applications Due November 15
We give priority consideration to applications from siblings of current students and others in the Burgundy community. If your family includes children who are not currently attending Burgundy, but for whom you would like to apply for admission for the 2015-2016 school year, applications are due November 15. Apply online and contact Lori Adams (loria@burgundyfarm.org or 703.842.0464) if you have questions or need assistance. Campus visits for these potential students will be scheduled in early December.
Campus Renewal Construction Update
The kindergarten students were thrilled to make leaf prints in fresh concrete this week.
The kindergarten classes made their mark on construction this week. Fall's arrival at Burgundy inspired the kindergarten teachers to suggest making leaf imprints in fresh concrete behind the Early Childhood classrooms. One by one, the Penguins and Polar Bears stepped up to a section of concrete, placed a leaf and tapped its edges. Carolyn followed directions very well; she explained, "You don't want to press them too hard or the concrete would cover the leaf." Adrienne said she was happy the leaf imprints would be in the concrete "forever," and Thomas was happy because "a lot of people will see those leaf prints." Check out the photos on Burgundy's Facebook page.

Work on other parts of Campus Renewal construction is continuing. As installation progresses on support posts for The Worm, decking behind the Early Childhood classrooms, and gabion walls on the hillside, the work is constantly being checked to verify that things are as they should be. For example, although The Worm is taking shape, the cedar support posts have been positioned temporarily. Before they are set with fresh concrete bases, the posts are being checked and measured against each other and the new level of the surrounding ground. Some posts may come down for adjustments, and then they will be resituated. This is part of the process to ensure our Outdoor Classroom and Discovery Playground is built as designed to be a long-lasting, high-quality addition to Burgundy's distinctive environment.
