Students of all ages enjoying the pool into October, first graders howling like the wolves they are studying, the cedar support posts being sunk for "The Worm" on the Discovery Playground, 8th graders attending the Life After High School Fair and chatting up high school admission representatives, Middle School tour guides training for our first admission open house, our soccer team battling in a wild 8-goal game on a beautiful afternoon--these are just a few of the images of the enjoyable and productive fall week we have had! And so much more is on the way.

The Fall Fair, a hallmark of the fall season, is two weeks away. The Fair raises money for Burgundy's generous financial aid program and supports socioeconomic diversity, which has always been a hallmark of Burgundy. The Fair is both an incredibly fun festival, with great music, food, crafts, and games and also an opportunity for alumni to reconnect! All parents, along with faculty, staff, and middle school students give of their time to make the fair happen, and what an occasion it is. This signature Burgundy event, like many of our most memorable Burgundy events, happens because we come together as a community to make it happen. Please plan to be with us, and thank you in advance for your support, as volunteers and as patrons of the event!

Meantime, a few more important reminders:

  • Campus Renewal: The construction zone is beginning to evidence the beginnings of more and more major elements of the Discovery Playground, including the Early Childhood deck and the aforementioned Worm. We expect quite a lot of work to take place in the coming weeks! We expect the bulk of it to be done before the Fair, but enough, certainly, will be done, so that we will be able to use the Blacktop as usual.

  • First admission open house: Hard to believe, but it's time to begin meeting new prospective families. Two of our open houses this year occur while school is in session, including next Friday's. Word of mouth always is the best way for us to attract new Burgundy families. Many of you have brought families our way, and we thank you and encourage you to spread the word and invite friends and acquaintances to RSVP to Lori (703.329.6968 or loria@burgundyfarm.org) for one of our open houses.

  • Carpool: Now that we are one month into the year, as is often the case, we are having some 'growing pains' with respect to carpool. It is so critical that we maintain excellent safety when it comes to the intersection of cars and kids. Please read the piece below on carpool carefully. Thanks for your help!

  • All Parent Meeting: Finally, on Tuesday night we have our All Parent Meeting. This is an opportunity for us to update you on various matters and to talk about what's on your mind. When you register to attend, you may indicate a topic of interest. We will try to incorporate into our general remarks topics of wide interest, and we will field questions about those and other topics. One topic that I intend to talk about Tuesday is our school community and our care for our core value of diversity. I am sure we also will have Campus Renewal updates and other information to share. We hope to see you there! (Note: If you have a question or an issue that is particular to your child or class, please start by speaking with the teacher or staff person most directly involved. Kari Cafeo is available as a next level of assistance.)

Sincerely,

carpoolCarpool Reminder: Help Us Be Safe!

Carpool rules are in place for one reason: to keep our students safe. Unfortunately, there are still instances of unsafe behavior, especially in the mornings. Your cooperation is expected and appreciated.

  • The campus speed limit is 5 m.p.h.
  • If you want to walk your child to class, first drop him or her off in the carpool lane, then park and meet your child at the Blacktop. We want to avoid children crossing the carpool lane so they are out of the way of drivers.
  • After you have dropped off or picked up your child, wait until the car at Station #1 pulls away before following station by station.
  • When pulling away, keep your eyes in front of you, watching for adult pedestrians.
  • Do not back up from the circular parking lot during carpool times. This creates potential rear-end collisions. If you park, you must wait until after carpool to back out.
  • If you have to drop off materials, we are happy to help you in the carpool lane, or you may make arrangements to drop off before or after carpool.
Emergency Alert Notifications
As you probably know, Burgundy was on lock-in for a period of time Thursday morning. After noticing helicopters overhead, we contacted police and learned of a reported assault in the area. As a precaution we instituted a lock-in and kept children indoors but continued teaching. When police ended their search we resumed normal activities. The lock-in was reported via email and recorded phone call to parents and other contacts in our emergency alert notification system, and to those who have opted in to text message alerts. If you did not receive an email or phone call, contact alert@burgundyfarm.org. If you would like to subscribe to text message notifications, text the word ALERT to 22300.
Cove Closing Weekend
This year we are closing up Cooper's Cove for the winter on the weekend of November 1-2, and everyone is invited to come help!

It's a family-friendly event, and you are welcome to come for all or any part of the time. It's mostly a lot of hauling, packing, storing and weather-proofing, but it's also a time to enjoy the Cove with good company at a nice time of year. Days are busy but there is time to catch up around the fire in the evening. We promise to feed you well! All you have to bring is yourself, a pair of favorite work gloves, and the usual bedding/layers of clothing that you would for a vigorous Cove visit. Children of all ages are welcome, but parents are completely responsible for them and they will be put to work.

Want to come? We need to know: how many, for which meals, and any dietary issues. Send questions or RSVP to Vini by Wednesday, October 22.
Fall Fair: Introducing Sweet Potato Chili
Dave Evans, alumni parent and owner of La Prima Catering (which has the highest "green rating" of any caterer in the Washington area, as certified by the Green Restaurant Association) will once again bring his signature chili to the Fall Fair. This year, he will team up with Groundworks Farm, owned by alumni Margaret Evans Brown '02 and Kevin Brown '01, to introduce Sweet Potato Vegetarian Chili. This chili packs a lot of flavor with ingredients that include the sustainably grown, recently harvested sweet potatoes along with black beans, tomatoes, peppers and more. It is vegan, gluten free and delicious!
fairvolFall Fair: Updates and Reminders
Earlier this week you should have received an email from your Fall Fair Class Coordinator with links to Sign Up Genius to staff Fall Fair activities. Every parent is expected to give one hour to the Fair, and fortunately many do more. Please sign up by Thursday, October 9 so that we can be sure we have enough help to run each activity. If we don't, we may have to shorten or cancel an activity. Help us all to put on an event that does so much for our children and our community. Thanks! Contact Laura Davis if you haven't heard from your class coordinator.

We're looking for special sweets to add to the Bake Sale. The Fall Fair is a nut-free event. We cannot sell any baked goods containing nuts, nut extracts, or nut-based flour. Consider making a gluten-free item, as we receive many requests for them. If you do please label the item as "gluten-free." Remember, we're also looking for donations to the Used Book and Kids' Closet Sales. Get all the details about donations.
constructionCampus Renewal Construction Update
Workers align a support post for "The Worm."
Things are really starting to take shape everywhere!
  • Students and staff alike have been excited to watch the posts for "The Worm" play structure go up. Workers finished digging holes, which are partially filled with concrete for a base before the Western Red Cedar wood posts are positioned and more concrete is added. The Early Childhood (EC) classes have made trips up the stairs with their teachers to see the progress.
  •  The supports and foundation for the deck behind the EC classrooms have been built. Planks will start to go down soon. EC students have been talking about what they will do once the deck is done--they have big plans for picnic lunches and outside snacks.
  • Workers have been busy prepping the ground behind the First Grade and Extended Day building ahead of creating a new stairway. Large PVC drain pipes are being installed to funnel water runoff collected from the hillside bioretention collection ponds and the First Grade Building downspouts. The Penguin Kindergarten class had a construction worker help them with a short experiment to compare the speed of objects rolling down the pipes.
Spotlight On ... Community Service
On Saturday, September 20, a group of more than 15 Middle School students and several parents, under the direction of Danya Peacock '17 and his father Joe, held the first Burgundy Road cleanup of this year. Burgundy continues to partner with the Virginia Department of Transportation Adopt a Highway Program, and has agreed to clean trash on Burgundy Road from our campus down East Drive to Telegraph Road four times a year. As you might expect, we typically find many water bottles, paper trash and many cigarette butts. We recycle anything we can.
Buy a Book: Thanks!
Thank you to all the families who donated money to the library through the Buy a Book program. It was a big success; we received donation dollars for over 100 books. Thanks for your participation!
Reminders
  • Don't forget the All Parent Meeting on Tuesday, October 7, 7 p.m. in the Loft. There will be lots of time to ask questions of Jeff, Kari, and other Burgundy leaders. Please register today if you plan to attend and let us know if you need childcare.
  • A reception and tree dedication for Burgundy's late director Don Mills will be held Saturday, October 18 at 10 a.m., before the Fall Fair. RSVP or share memories of Don by emailing memories@burgundyfarm.org.

  • We give priority consideration to admission applications from siblings of current students and others in the Burgundy community. Applications are due November 15. Contact Lori Adams with questions.
