El Norte
(1983/141 min./R)

Director Gregory Nava and his wife, Anna Thomas, co-wrote this visually beautiful, truly groundbreaking independent film that follows a brother and sister, Enrique and Rosa, as they flee through Mexico and cross the U.S. border after a Guatemalan death squad kills their union organizer father and "disappears" their mother. Roger Ebert called the film "a Grapes of Wrath
for our time."

Dirty Pretty Things (2002/97 min./R)
Set in London, this film by British director Stephen Frears is the story of Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a Nigerian doctor illegally in the UK, and Senay (Audrey Tatou), a Turkish Muslim seeking asylum. Although neither may work legally in England, they meet while working at the same hotel. When the manager, a dealer in black market organs, recruits Senay into a ghastly exchange, Okwe tries to save her.

In America
(2002/105 min. /PG-13)
Jim Sheridan ( My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) co-wrote and directed this loosely autobiographical, luminous drama about a young Irish family living illegally in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan. The usually light hearted father, Johnny Sullivan (Paddy Considine), is an aspiring actor haunted by the death of his young son back in Ireland. The mother, Sarah (Samantha Morton), faces a risky new pregnancy, and their two daughters make friends with Mateo (Djimon Hounsou), an angry artist with AIDS.
