Dear Friends of the BBLA,

Sashaying across the beautiful ballroom floor to the fine rhythm of the orchestra last Saturday night, trying not to step clumsily on the gown of one of the doyens of our community, I knew unmistakably, that we were having another Beseda Ball.

It is called Beseda after a salon dance first performed in Prague 151 years ago. The avid historians out there could google it on Wikipedia... I did.

Amongst the high-heeled, well-heeled and some visibly over-the-heeled participants, we had a strong contingent of our diplomats which is always nice to see.

It was a great success and this year, with our emphasis on education, I had great pleasure introducing one of our organizations, which is very active in this field: The American Fund for Czech and Slovak Leadership Studies. Your generous support contributed greatly to their cause and their work.

I am writing this while I am currently somewhere over the North Pole, on my way to Asia, but I want to thank again all those who made this event possible. It is amazing what a dedicated volunteer committee can achieve. I am also extending my thanks to our fabulous facility team. Thank you, thank you.

See you at our next event.

Manuscript Discovery of Dvorak's Cello Concerto
Majda Kallab Whitaker

The recent discovery of the earliest known musical manuscript of Antonin Dvorak's New York-composed masterpiece, the Cello Concerto in B minor, Opus 104, will be marked by an unprecedented gathering [Saturday, April 5 at 6:30pm] of American cellists and Dvorak experts co-sponsored by the Dvorak American Heritage Association and Violoncello Society, Inc., to discuss the historical context and meaning of this recent find. The manuscript, from the personal archive of Alwin Schroeder (1855-1928), the master cellist who performed the American premiere of the work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in December 1896, has been kept by the family of a favorite student of Schroeder's in the mid-1920's.

The original eight-page, double-sided, handwritten manuscript will be presented to musicians, scholars and the general public for the first time in the Dvorak Room, the exhibition and study space maintained by the Dvorak American Heritage Association in the historic Bohemian National Hall (1896).
