Dear Friends of the BBLA, I find it very dificult in today's sub-freezing temperatures to predict that in a couple of weeks we will be welcoming spring again. While some of our friends continue to hibernate down in sunny Florida, they may not fully appreciate the plight that the stationary New Yorkers endure now. Global warming? Anybody? Yet, we are busy preparing for another season of activities. The Bohemian National Hall is getting ready for a large event that will benefit our nonprofit: the Asia Art Fair. This prestigious occasion, organized along the lines of the yearly American Art Fair, brings many interesting demographics into the building. With the Asia Art Fair held at the BNH, the Czech diplomats can use the event for their diplomatic efforts as well, by inviting their important counterparts to the show. We will then wrap up the month with our Beseda Ball. I hope to see you there. By the way, do not forget to celebrate Saint Joseph's day on March 19th. Happy name day to all of you Saint or not so Saint Josephs out there. Joseph Balaz, President Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association

PAINTING ABSTRACT, WITH TRACES OF REALITY
interview with artist Sue Karnet, by Katerina Kyselica
I met artist Sue Karnet in a way typical for New York - at a random 'meet-up' gathering of like-minded people searching for connection; we clicked when discussing art and our hearts filled with joy when we found out we also shared a Czech background. Her father, a Czech journalist and writer Jiri Karnet, settled in New York; Sue was born a New Yorker.
When I visit Sue at her studio, we can spend hours talking about everything related to art, the art history classes she teaches, what we struggle with in our work or whether it's worth gallery hopping anytime soon. During my last visit in February, her studio was filled up with canvases and new sculptures of her popular series of Butoh Dancers. As she has been preparing the artworks for her upcoming exhibition at BBLA Gallery (April), I asked her a series of questions about her creative endeavors.
