HAPPY OCTOBER!
NewsletterOctober 2012
Monica/ Sept 2012 Newsletter
Hello Friends and Supporters!

Halloween is fast approaching, and we've been busy getting decorations out of the garage, shutting down the garden, helping residents with homecoming, as well as gearing up for the winter. It seems like we're always doing things today to get ready for tomorrow! Dr. Bob says, "chance favors things in motion", so the more we do, the more likely something result in success!

NYEP has also begun to organize the upcoming homeless youth count to take place on January 24th, 2013. NYEP is working closely with the Reno Area Alliance for the Homeless Youth Subcommittee to plan a successful count. We plan to secure a downtown venue for 24 hours, survey youth and give out incentives for participation, as well as hygiene supplies. Several current residents and alumni of NYEP will help to make the event a success. Please contact me if you would like to provide incentives, volunteer at the count, or provide news coverage for the event.

We have quite a bit of excitement going on around NYEP. We've got a full house (6 girls), two new VISTAs, and several new volunteers. We also said "goodbye" to Cindy Ringer, our VISTA of 3 years, at the end of September. Cindy is a part of our NYEP family, and we will miss her. Cindy has been an team member in building the tracking systems and curriculums used by NYEP. Cindy also became close with the girls and staff during her service. She will continue to volunteer, but just the fun stuff!

Very similarly to the residents - seasons, new relationships, new expectations, changes in income and supports - affect how we deal with what life throws at us. NYEP made it to its 5th birthday on September 24th. We hope to be here for many years to come...aging gracefully.

Thank you for your continued support,

Monica DuPea

Executive Director

Young People's Ideas for Boosting Jobs
Strengthening AmeriCorps and Creating year-long paid internships are among the solutions for boosting job creation captured in Young American Ideas Book. The ideas come directly from young people interviewed during the Young Invicibles' nationwide bus tour.

Now Presenting Ready by 21
How do you talk about Ready by 21 to a room full of strangers? Bryan Joffe knows. As a project director for education and youth development at the American Association of School Administrators, Bryan travels the country speaking about Ready by 21. After one typically compelling talk at a recent national conference, we ask Bryan to share some thoughts about what resonates with audiences. He shared this with his ready by 21 colleagues.

Collective Impact and Opportunity Youth: Movements at the Crossroads
The past few years have brought a renewal and reframing of two powerful American ideas: collective action and individuals success. And now these ideas are coming together at the intersection of "collective impact" and "opportunity youth." Rarely do we have such a chance to combine concepts that could fundamentally change decision makers think about policy, practice and human potential.
