The Schools That Rule The Web
How can the U.S. boost college students' grades? The Internet, of course. Recent studies prove it: increased engagement between educators and students via email and social media has a positive effect on learning.
Best Education Sites' comprehensive data set shows that a college's web presence is more than just marketing - it's often an indicator of an institution's overall quality. Learn more about schools that rule the web here. |

 Dear Friends and Supporters of NYEP,
Lots of things going....school started, it's an election year, and summer is coming to an end. With that said, we sometimes become so busy with our personal lives that we have a hard time seeing outside of ourselves. I was reading a recent study and learned that each year, an estimated 1.6 million children and youth (ages 12-17) experience homelessness without a parent or guardian. These youth leave home for a variety of reasons, including severe family conflict, parental abuse or neglect, parental mental health issues, or substance abuse. Prior to leaving home:
- 43% of homeless youth report being beaten by a caretaker;
- 25% of homeless youth have had caretakers request sexual activity; and
- 20% of homeless youth had conflicts with their parents around their sexual activity which caused them to leave.
Whether runaway or throwaway, once on the street, unaccompanied homeless youth face numerous legal barriers that often complicate their attempts to meet their basic necessities of life on their own, and prevent them from reaching out for assistance to state agencies and service providers that could otherwise help them. We can begin by becoming aware, opening our eyes to what is happening around us - who is in the street? Are they youth? Who is helping? How are they helping? How do we know what they are doing is helping the problem? Simple awareness of the problem and knowledge of resources available will create an opportunity to make a difference in a youth's life. In a speech made in March 1969, by Robert F. Kennedy, he said the national gross product, GDP's predecessor, counts many things such as jails, cigarette advertising, nuclear warheads and armored police cars. But he said it "does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages..... It measure everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile." I ask you, "let's work together to focus on the important things in life and help others to do so as well!" Sincerely, Monica DuPea Executive Director |
