Greetings!

When I founded TWM in January 2001 with the tagline Recognizing Our Unity; Celebrating Our Diversity, it was with the intention of bringing together women who might not normally interact with one another, putting a human face and personal stories to the various differences among us so that we can learn from and be inspired by one another.

We did this on many occasions over food, because what better way than that to connect!  One such event was in February 2006, called My Life as a Black Woman at Amy Ruth's Restaurant up in Harlem. TWM My Life as a Black Woman

TWM's My Life as a Black Woman:

Dinner & Discussion

As we reflect in 2013, we acknowledge that as a nation in some ways we have come very far in terms of equal rights for all, but at the same time, especially with everything that has happened over this past Spring and Summer, realize that there is still much work to be done.

During this week's 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Women's Equality Day, we are reminded of all those who came before us, who ceaselessly fought and sacrificed so much to get us to where we are today. TWM has been proud to contribute to the continuing legacy of this work in our own small but significant ways with programs like the one at Amy Ruth's and our screening of Iron Jawed Angels  noted in the article below.

We hope to evolve and expand our work connecting women and men to themselves, each other and the world around them by generating awareness of various social justice and global issues as we move through the next decade of our existence.  Stay tuned for more updates about this transition as they transpire...

In the meantime, be sure to like and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to be in the loop with all things TWM, and become a member to support our continued journey.  As always THANK YOU to those who have already been with us so far -  we wouldn't be here without you!

In unity and with gratitude,

TWM'S CLOSE-UP ON COLOMBIA: Coffee, Cumbia, Cartels and Shakira!

Colombia event
On October 8, 2008 TWM hosted an event in Little Colombia in Queens to learn about this vibrant country with colorful culture.

After a traditional Colombian meal, guests listened to a panel of people with varying experiences in and perspectives about Colombia. Francisco Sierra Toro, a Trade Specialist with the Colombia Government Trade Bureau, spoke about the work he has done to push past the common stereotypes about Colombia and to make people aware of the richness and positivity inherent in Colombia's land, history and culture. Adriana Aristizabal, Cultural Attach and Press Contact for the General Consulate of Colombia in New York, shared videos and experiences of her past work as a journalist in conflict-ridden areas.

Patricia Sacristan, a Colombian-born development professional, talked about her experiences as a young person in Colombia, and an immigrant. Jenny Shapiro, an American and avid traveler, fell in love with Colombia on her first visit. She spoke about her travels and her work with human rights organizations operating in Colombia and Gregorio Uribe educated us about the country's rich and diverse music.

TWM at 12: You've Come Long Way, Baby!

http://www.thewomensmosaic.org/pevent.asp?pastid=87
Twelve years ago, the world was a very  different place. It was pre-9/11, there were still plenty of people without email or cell phones, and the majority of women's organizations were only profession, ethnic or issue specific.  We set out to encompass and embrace all that a woman could be, discovering her own identity by connecting with, learning about and being inspired by the diversity of women around her - and we produced over 100 unique events to help make that happen.

We've come a long way in terms of women's leadership, organizations that have since been created and the more mainstream understanding and hardcore research demonstrating that the empowerment of women and girls are key to making the world a better place. In other words, it's now common knowledge that when women and girls benefit, the entire planet does. It's very rewarding to know that we were a grass-roots part of that effort!

As we continue to transition into our puberty, we hope that you stay connected with TWM through our TWM eNewsletters, TWM Flashbacks both here and in future emails, and especially Twitter and Facebook, which is the best way to get updates on our CHICKS ROCK! posts and any other information, articles, and events we want to share with you.  If you're new to TWM, there are plenty of links in this newsletter to catch up on what we've been up to thus far.

And last, but certainly not least, if you've been on this journey with us especially as a TWM Member or donor- THANK YOU!  We wouldn't be here without you!
