Sorry this is a little late. Winter colds and nasty weather got the best of us.

The days increasingly cold, big flakes of snow are flying and the holidays were here and gone. A soft blanket of snow now covers the sleeping earth and we brought nature's treasures indoors to capture a little winter magic. This is the same thing we try to create in our paintings - an homage to the beauty and serenity of the winter season.

Nothing is more exciting for my wife and I than fresh snowfall. The minute the flakes start to fly we grab a thermos of coffee, the camera equipment, warm up the Jeep and away we go. The early morning is an amazing time to explore winter's beauty and see first hand the soft, muted colors. To me this is a religious experience.

I'm not much for plein air painting in the winter. I personally like to be comfortable in my studio so that's why it is very important to take the time and jot down good descriptions along with sketches (in the Jeep) and a lot of photo reference. We also shoot video to capture the mood and feeling. FYI - the iPhone 5s has a sweet video camera. Remember with digital photography you can shoot multiple images at nearly no price at all. Always shoot your images horizontal and vertical. Also a tip my wife does is charge the camera batteries but instead putting it back in your camera, keep it in a pocket to keep them warm. The cold drains the power.

I can't say enough praises about the iPad. This machine has cut down on inkjet printer and photo paper costs. I also love the fact that I can zoom into an area to see details. But best of all I have my portfolio at my fingertips.

In this month's newsletter: Some of you may have noticed my web site is up and running. Well, I'm introducing my new site. I'm sharing a one day workshop I had last year and some of my photo reference from several days while up north for the holidays. Please note I am doing a demonstration for the Illiana Artists on February 10 at 6:30pm and all are welcome. for free. Check out the chance to win a half hour critique with me in my studio.

I will be scheduling a couple more workshops in my studio this summer - dates to be announced. If you want to be placed on my workshop mailing list send me an email with name, email, phone number to Dale@DalePopovich.com.

Robert Krajecki and I postponed our Palette & Chisel classes by one week because of the weather - first time ever. Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting 101, 102, 103 started January 14, 2014. We are offering another 10-week session at the end of March. This series of classes has been popular at the P&C since 2004. In addition, I am offering my watercolor class on Thursday afternoons at the P&C. This summer I'm offering watercolor classes in the morning and afternoons on Thursdays at the P&C. Remember I also teach out of my studio and still have openings on Tuesdays from 11:00am -1:00pm.
Thanks and let's start painting.

Sincerely,
Dale L Popovich
WEBSITE AND BLOG
MY SITE IS UP AND RUNNING

With the help of my wife, Marilee we have launch my new website DalePopovich.com. You'll find my bio, portfolios, instruction info, along with a calendar with up-to-date events, workshops, shows and classes and a My Journal - a blog.
While you are taking a look at my website please read My Journal article titled
Who New I'd Have Such Big Shoes to Fill. It's about an amazing  discovery in my family tree. Here's an excerpt below.

I got a phone call from my brother, Lee a few Mondays ago. My sister-in-law, Margo unearthed some more family history on my mom's side. You see my dear sister-in-law is a genealogy goddess. She has an amazing passion for finding her roots. Her family would take vacations trouncing throughout the south going to libraries (before the internet), old cemeteries and knocking on doors of distant relatives.

One of Margo's greatest genealogy accomplishments was proving her mother, Fran's linage to the Revolutionary War. Margo and Fran received their certificates from the Daughters of the Revolutionary War in the spring of 2012. Fran passed two days after she received her certificate.

Margo was hot on the Leslie family tree. We know our Great grandpa, Charles Leslie had served in the Civil War. But she found out his father, Robert, our Great, Great grandpa was the Regiment Commander of the 159th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry..

If that wasn't cool enough she tracked even further back. This is where it gets really good.
WORKSHOPS & CLASSES
ALL DAY WORKSHOP AT POPOVICH'S STUDIO
popovich 2013 workshop

I held a workshop in his Indiana studio this past year. My studio is only 31 miles from the Palette & Chisel. The all day event reviewed transparent watercolor painting principles. The first half of the day I demonstrated the the techniques of capturing a landscape in transparent watercolor. Class broke for homemade chicken pot pie, salad and lemon curd tartlets.

Popovich summer 2013 watercolor workshop

In the afternoon students took brush to paper. Their skill sets ranged from beginners in watercolors to more advance levels. All of my workshops and classes focus on personal attention to each student's needs and skill sets.

The workshop ended with a glass of wine and critique of each student's painting with questions and answers.

Information on my studio workshops or if you or your organization would like to hold a workshop feel free to contact me at 219-838-8645.

HOMAGE TO NATURE

Our family spent the holidays together up north. We had a pleasant time with my brother, sister-in-law and my 92 year old father-in-law, Coby. Here's a few pictures of an early morning snowfall and my corgis, Tillie & Annie.

Reading about nature is fine,
but if a person walks in the woods
and listens carefully,
he can learn more than
what is in books.

This course is vital all students wishing to pursue a successful art career, as well as students who wish to improve their drawing or painting skills. This course begins with Fundamentals 101, which stresses drawing and composition, then continues with Fundamentals 102, which stresses color theory and application. In 103, students put the practical theories and applications learned in 101 and 102 through several landscape paintings. Each assignment is designed specifically for both the beginning fine artist as well as the intermediate students. This course covers the basics of theory and practice, composition, linear perspective, and many of the various techniques of painting. Following the tradition of the Academy method of instruction, all three levels are taught  in the same classroom, which encourages reinforcement of theories and practices within all levels.

Fundamentals 201: All students that have completed the Fundamentals 101, 102, and 103 can continue with 201 class to choose areas that they wish to improve.

All assignments will be individually designed to help the student in the area or areas that they choose. Each assignment will be incorporated with painting landscapes, seascapes, and still life or figures.

Dale L. Popovich is an award-winning watercolorist and teacher who is passionate about capturing the raw beauty of the American landscape with the fluid stroke of a brush. Talent and training aside, it's Dale's vision that best informs his work. Temporarily blinded at age 20 for 1-1/2 years, Dale learned to rely on his mind's eye to sustain him. After a nine hour major brain surgery removing a cyst on his optic nerve, he had to learn how to walk, talk and write again. With vision finally restored, he discovered he could see more clearly than before, easily filtering out the visual "noise" around him to focus on a subject's essentials. His paintings began to reflect a certain purity of perception, and this "way of seeing" became the hallmark of his painting.

Spending his childhood summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Dale learned to love its colors, textures, denizens and moods. Today, his paintings celebrate these American landscapes and man's humble efforts to tame it.

Trained at The American Academy of Art in Chicago by Director and President, Irving Shapiro, AWS. Dale was deeply inspired by this great American twentieth-century watercolorist. Dale later taught for many years at The American Academy of Art. Currently, he teaches at the prestigious Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, and in his own studio. Devoted to both painting and teaching, Dale's work hangs in collections around the country.
