This course is vital all students wishing to pursue a successful art career, as well as students who wish to improve their drawing or painting skills. This course begins with Fundamentals 101, which stresses drawing and composition, then continues with Fundamentals 102, which stresses color theory and application. In 103, students put the practical theories and applications learned in 101 and 102 through several landscape paintings. Each assignment is designed specifically for both the beginning fine artist as well as the intermediate student. This course covers the basics of theory and practice, composition, linear perspective, and many of the various techniques of painting. Following the tradition of the Academy method of instruction, all three levels are taught  in the same classroom, which encourages reinforcement of theories and practices within all levels.

Fundamentals 201: All students who have completed the Fundamentals 101, 102, and 103 can continue with 201 class to choose areas that they wish to improve.

All assignments will be individually designed to help the student in the area or areas that they choose. Each assignment will be incorporated with painting landscapes, seascapes, and still life or figures.

Watercolor painting is not just the process of applying pigment to paper. It is knowing what color, what value, what temperature and what intensity to use to create form, depth and rhythm in creating a work of art.

A demonstration of a composition in a step-by-step format is given each class. I explain the process and techniques as I paint, and then the students apply them in their own painting during each class.

Krajecki Talks Watercolor
at the Palette and Chisel

by Robert Krajecki and Marilee Jacobi-Popovich

I spent an afternoon with Bob Krajecki in his studio talking about painting, teaching and his watercolor class at the Palette & Chisel. I studied under Bob some 36 years ago. I know first-hand the quality of education he delivers. This knowledge helped build the groundwork for my successful graphic design career. Here's some questions I asked Bob over a cup of coffee.

How long have you been teaching? I started teaching the Fundamentals of drawing and painting at a private art school in Chicago in 1972. I am currently teaching the Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting, and Watercolor Painting at the Palette and Chisel Academy. I also have a continuing watercolor class in far western Kaneville, Illinois.

Who was your mentor and why? Didn't have a mentor. But Irving Shapiro was my inspiration as a truly great painter.

What level is this class? All of the classes are offered at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

Why is your instruction different from others? I give my students a road map of what I feel they need to learn. I give them both the verbal and visual information necessary to enable them to have skills as successful, independent artists long after they leave the classroom.

Do you do a demo a week?
For the watercolor class, I will choose a photographic reference that can be used to demonstrate color, composition, perspective or technique. I send the photograph to the students via email. Reminding students that a photograph is just a point of reference for a painting, I will then manipulate the reference to show how it can be improved by changing the color, value, and/or the composition. In class I discuss the changes and the procedure that will be used for the painting. After I finish the first of three washes, the students will follow. Depending on the results of the first wash, adjustments to the composition are discussed and the second wash is demonstrated. We finish the class with the final wash that completes the painting - which I also photograph and send to my students. I generally follow this pattern of instruction in every class. A recent class focused on the study of color, in particular, orange-a "seasonal" choice. The pictures (below) show the stages. The first is the original photo. The second is the adjusted image. The third image is the final demonstration painting.

Where should I get my reference material?
Most of the photographic references are my own. Many are generously offered by my students from their travels. Others are taken from the internet - for classroom instruction only. While it's tempting to "borrow" a picture from Flickr or other internet sites, avoid the risk of copyright infringement by simply using your own photos.

What should I expect to learn in class? The first and most important lesson for beginning watercolor students is to work "direct", which simply means: plan your brushstrokes, apply your paint, then put your brush down. Never go back! In the process of trying to correct a painting while damp, the layers will be disturbed creating a non-transparent, sometimes "muddy" painting. Once the student has learned to paint "direct", the focus moves to understanding the importance of painting correct values. Learning to use color correctly is the next step.

Do you have a supplies list? That is available for students who sign up for a class.

Do you have a book? I have been working on three books for the past two years. The first is a book on everything about drawing and painting - a basic Fundamental book that is awaiting my editor to finish. One on perspective is in the works, as well as a book on watercolor painting.

Let's Get Serious about the Basics of
Fundamentals of Drawing
and Painting
at the Palette & Chisel
by Dale Popovich and Marilee Jacobi-Popovich

I spent time with Dale in his studio the other day. Yes, I'm his wife coming on 27 years. We meet in college at the American Academy of Art. I wanted to be a graphic design trail blazer while Dale had his compass focused on fine art. Not long after he graduated Dale started teaching part-time at our alma mater. Part-time turned into full time after six months.

We talked about his current role as an instructor at the Palette & Chisel, co-teaching Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting with Bob Krajecki.

How long have you been teaching? I've been teaching for 33 years. The reason I have such a passion for teaching is watching students grow and archive success and satisfaction in their artwork.

Who should take your class? If you need to improve your art skills this class has been designed for you. It's been tried and true, for over 30+ years. Students have become successful artist
after taking our course.

What level is this class? Why is it broken into 101, 102 and 103? This class is broken into three levels or should I say three steps like building blocks of learning. A student needs a natural order in learning starting at the beginning with the basics. We help you see and interpret, not just look and copy.

I understand this is a co-taught class. How does this work?
Mr. Krajecki and I have been working together on this class and additional assignments for 33 years. We compliment each others teachings. We have the same philosophy on art with only a few minor differences. We believe it is always good to get two views points with the same training.

How was the course developed? This course was developed as a whole not in parts and pieces. Most colleges teach color, perspective, composition and techniques as separate courses. We believe you can't learn this way -- we help the student understand how all aspects tie together. It has to be taught as a whole -- instructing this way gives our students tools to problem solve which makes for a fulfilling experience.

What should I expect to learn in class? First we will give you the skills to see not just look. The students will be taught first the principles of drawing then values or tone. As you grow we will focus on composition, color and and last technique.group

closeup of paintings

How will I know how much I've grown? At the end of each 10-week session we hold a class critique. The students bring all of their work in for review. We encourage the 102 and 103 students to bring in the 101 work. This is one of my favorite parts of the class. I enjoy see how everyone has improved, how satisfied the students are and how excited the new students are to see the advancement of the 102 and 103s.

Mr. Irving Shapiro (1927-1994) commanded respect with his elegant, gracious style. We both were fortunate to learn from and work for this remarkable man. Our experience came to only a few and we are grateful to have had him as inspiration, mentor and friend.

The Creative Crafts television series, produced between 1973 and 1991 hosted an interview of Mr. Shapiro in 1980, with two 27 minute demonstrations. While a lucky find turned up the videos on www.ebay.com, they are also available at  www.artvideo.com. Check them out and gain some insight into this influential 20th century artist and teacher.

At a young age, with crayons and coloring book at hand, Bob recalls his mother telling him he was "good at staying inside the lines", and the seed was planted. He became the typical teenage boy, interested in playing baseball and drawing cartoons. Though he was a strong baseball player, Bob chose to pursue his other passion, art.

He began his studies with the Famous Artists Correspondence Course, but midway through the course, he was drafted into the Army. During his tour of duty in the Army Air Corps, training pilots for missions in Viet Nam, he managed to continue his art pursuits by creating a cartoon strip for the aviation newspaper, the Army Flyer.

Once back in civilian life, Bob enrolled at the American Academy of Art, with plans to become a commercial artist. At the suggestion of a fellow student, he sat in on a watercolor demonstration by then Director and President, Irving Shapiro, AWS. Fascinated that a painting of three children, carrying schoolbooks, walking down a country road...in the fall... could be beautifully completed in an hour and a half, Bob was smitten with the watercolor bug, never again to "stay inside the lines".

Including a semester at the Chicago Academy of Art, Bob's journey would lead him to a fine art degree from the American Academy of Art. During a 28-year teaching career at the Academy, he was a fulltime Fundamentals instructor, often taught watercolor classes for Mr. Shapiro, and taught his own watercolor classes for six years. Bob was also the first chair of the Fundamentals department, a position he held for 10 years.

Inspired by John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Richard Schmid, Bob's philosophy and art reflect realism influenced by impressionism, the core of the traditional instruction offered at the Academy when he was a student.

Bob's work was recently published in the April, 2012 issue of Watercolor Artist Magazine

Bob gives demonstrations, offers workshops, and judges shows at many Chicagoland venues.
He is an instructor at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, and far west of the big city, he holds continuing classes in his small hometown of Kaneville, where old farmsteads and cornfields still dominate the landscape.

Dale L. Popovich is an award-winning watercolorist and teacher who is passionate about capturing the raw beauty of the American landscape with the fluid stroke of a brush. Talent and training aside, it's Dale's vision that best informs his work. Temporarily blinded at age 20, Dale learned to rely on his mind's eye to sustain him. With vision finally restored, he discovered he could see more clearly than before, easily filtering out the visual "noise" around him to focus on a subject's essentials. His paintings began to reflect a certain purity of perception, and this "way of seeing" became the hallmark of his painting.

Spending his childhood summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Dale learned to love its colors, textures, denizens and moods. Today, his paintings celebrate these American landscapes and man's humble efforts to tame it.

Trained at The American Academy of Art in Chicago by Director and President, Irving Shapiro, AWS. Dale was deeply inspired by this great American twentieth-century watercolorist. Dale later taught for many years at The American Academy of Art. Currently, he teaches at the prestigious Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, and in his own studio. Devoted to both painting and teaching, Dale's work hangs in collections around the country.
