The Greenwich Boat Show

The GBS is the most unique in-water boat show in the Northeast. Each year it's held on the Mianus River in Cos Cob, CT, where boaters can take advantage of free sea-trials to test boats on the open waters of Long Island Sound. This year the show boasts 43 brands from 19 dealers. The show has become a favorite among boaters who get to try an incredible variety of new boat models. And, perhaps best of all, the event is FREE to attend.

NOAA Invites Public Comment on the Draft of the National Charting Plan

NOAA invites public comment on the recently released National Charting Plan. Comments are due by midnight, June 1, 2017.

The National Charting Plan is a strategy to improve NOAA nautical chart coverage, products, and distribution. It describes the evolving state of marine navigation and nautical chart production, and outlines actions that will provide the customer with a suite of products that are more useful, up-to-date, and safer to navigate with. It is not a plan for the maintenance of individual charts, but a strategy to improve all charts.

Since the introduction of electronic navigational charts (ENCs) thirty years ago, the size of commercial vessels has increased four-fold and navigation systems have become more sophisticated. Additionally, there are now over 15 million recreational boat users in the U.S. and many have joined professional mariners in using electronic chart displays and NOAA digital chart products when navigating. User groups of all types are increasingly expecting more precise, higher resolution charts, and greater timeliness and ease-of-access to chart updates. This plan presents strategies to meet the growing demand.

Testing the Waters off Greenwich

Scientists and engineers from Connecticut Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Aquaculture (CTDABA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's New England Regional Laboratory, together with staff from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) Shellfish Sanitation Program began a hydrographic dye dilution study on April 3. They will be tracking the flow and dispersion of wastewater discharging into Long Island Sound from the Greenwich Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF), located on Grass Island in Greenwich Harbor.

A fluorescent dye was released from the Greenwich WPCF. As a result of the dye injection, portions of the Greenwich Harbor may turn reddish in color for a brief time and will be visible from the shores of Greenwich. Please note that this dye is not harmful to people or the ecosystem.

Information collected during this study will be used by USFDA and CTDABA to evaluate the impact of wastewater discharges on shellfish growing areas in Greenwich, and will help scientists determine where shellfish may be safely harvested.

The ultimate goal of these efforts is to improve water quality in Greenwich waters while supporting the enhancement of this critical natural oyster habitat.

Soundkeeper's Local Pumpout Program will become East Norwalk Blue, Inc.

East Norwalk Blue, Inc. will take over the Soundkeeper Pumpout Program, covering no-discharge areas from Rowayton to Bridgeport, CT with 3 pumpout boats.

ENB will work to redirect marine based pollution to the proper wastewater treatment
facilities through their on-the-water free mobile pumpout service operating from Norwalk to Bridgeport. Localized water degradation from vessel waste tank dumping in the Sound creates environmental and health issues to shellfish consumers, swimmers and boaters. They expect an on-line pumpout request page to be up shortly.
