Dear Knitters and Kumihimo-ists!
Saludos de Espaņa,
We are halfway through our adventure in Spain and what a time we are having. Our trip has been rich in culture and lots of good times with each other. In between running with the bulls, sightseeing, shopping and dining into the wee hours we have found some time for Kumihimo and Knitting! We are having a great time!
What a Knit shipping will resume when I return, on Thursday, April 18th. Your orders will be filled - first in, first out.
Happy Braiding, Karen

Clunky, Funky & Fun Bracelet Kits

Isn't this fun! The Clunky, Funky & Fun Bracelet is a combination of Magatama, 8/0 and 6/0 Toho/Miyuki Seed Beads. The fabulous Button and Loop Closure is a great technique and can be used in many applications. The nature of this closure allows for flexibility in sizing and allows for easy on & off. I love this and I am sure you will too!
There are enough beads and cord in your kit to accommodate a variety of sizes.
The Clunky, Funky & Fun Bracelet Kit comes in 10 Fun Color Way (photos are of Spring Brights)!
Click here to see the Clunk, Funky & Fun Bracelet Kits .
Kit includes:
1 Spool C-Lon Beadcord Magatama Beads
6/0 Toho or Miyuki Seed Beads
8/0 Toho or Miyuki Seed Beads
Button
Barrel
Big Eye Beading Needle
Instructions with Photos
Cost: $18 to $24
P.S. Please note that this kits uses C-Lon Beadcord which is a thinner cord than the C-Lon Tex 400. In order to maintain consistent tension on your cords, you should use a disk that is newer and has not been "stretched" out by larger diameter cords. I suggest that you get a Mini Disk ($3 each or 3 for $8.50). |

Kumihimo Tip #16 |
Stringing Magatama Beads
Magatama beads are a little different than other beads in that they are "directional". You may string them randomly for a more freeform look, however, if you want the Magatama beads to lie in a more regular pattern, you must string them in a "one direction" manner!
If magatama beads are all threaded in the same direction they will "spoon" each other. You will notice when you start threading the Magatamas that you can either thread "upwards" or "downwards". I thread "upwards". Consistency is what matters. The top picture shows the Magatamas aligned "directionally" and the bottom picture shows the magatama beads in a "random" alignment.
I string my magatama beads in a directional manner when I am braiding a necklace like the Magatama Fringe Necklace and I string the magatama beads "randomly" when I am making the bracelets. Lots of room for creativity.
Sometimes the Magatamas may not look like they are "spooning" even though you know you strung them correctly. Going in the directions that the beads are slanting, simply run your hand from top to bottom and this will align the beads (if you strung them correctly)! |

Kumihimo "Artist" of the Month
Sandra Haynie - Cape Charles, Virginia
Sandra and I were thinking alike this month. I was working on Magatama Bracelets and at the same time she sent me a picture of the bracelet she had just made. Beautiful, beautiful.
Here's what Sandra has to say about Kumihimo: "I have been making jewelry for about eight years, but stopped in 2009 when my husband died. In the fall of 2011, I saw a Kumihimo bracelet online and thought it was so neat, that maybe I would like to try it, so I ordered a loom with directions, started weaving with some yarns and ribbons, and was hooked. Once I learned the technique, I wanted to weave with beads.....then I saw some necklaces with the center done in chips, so I started making them. There's just so much you can create with Kumihimo! I am enjoying making jewelry again and know my husband would be very proud of me."
Thank you Sandra! |

Knitting "Artist" of the Month
Mimi Hook - Bethesda, Maryland
Mimi is a good friend of mine from Bethesda, Maryland. She is both a Kumihimo braider as well as a fabulous knitter!
She recently delighted me with a "Here it Is!" email. This is Mimi's Blended Seed Stitch Jacket.
Here's what Mimi has to say about her creation:
"The yarn is Mountain Colors Mountain Goat. I came to do the jacket in a funny way. I decided to do a knit along at my local yarn store (The Yarn Spot in Wheaton Maryland). The project was the swirl jacket by Sandra MacIver. When the yarn came in I got right to work--and discovered that even after sizing my needles down 3 steps, I still could not knit to gauge. But by this time I was in love with the yarn--and a light bulb went off. I had bought the Blended Seed Stitch Jacket pattern some years ago, putting it in my "to do someday" pile. The wool and the pattern were a perfect match. What a happy outcome. The final product is much more beautiful than the swirl jacket, because the seed stitch really brings out the beauty of the yarn. The pattern is super easy--perfect for television knitting, and I think the final result is elegant. I used the 9 different colors that had been suggested for the Swirl. The Purse Mimi has in hand is the Patchwork Shell Purse also designed by Irene York.
Thank you Mimi! |
