From the Library
Greetings from the Mary Cooper Library at Thornton Creek!
by Virginia Allemann - vaallemann@seattleschools.org

We have a beautiful new library, full of light and full of print books. Capital projects allows for a huge injection of funds to libraries. We have received over $60,000 of new print books! We will have new laptops, tablet devices for catalog searching, and many new ebooks.

The big question: when will the library be open?

Answer:  A very unsatisfying, "we're not sure." Casework has not arrived, although we are told it might be here soon. The reading nook (not sure what we will end up calling it) needs additional finishing on the woodwork and it will not be open immediately. I am working on an alternative setup for work with younger children.

Please do stop by, say hi, and take a look around. I will check out books after school until I can bring full groups into the library, which I hope will happen next week.

To families new to our community, welcome! I will be having library orientation sessions later in September when things are a little bit more "ready for prime time." Until then, let me know if you would like to have a library account set up so you can borrow books.

Parent-Group Fundraising
2010 Walkathon Banner
Save The Date: Thornton Creek Annual Walkathon - September 30, 2016

By Deb Glazer, Jenny Cugier, Barb Reilly
Walkathon Co-chairs

Get ready to break in your new school walking shoes and start off the school year with an enjoyable and healthy activity for the kids! After a year off for the construction of our amazing new building, our annual Parent-Group-Sponsored Walkathon is back! It's a fun and fit fundraiser for everyone.

On September 30th, the students power up their shoes, walk, roll, or dance with their classmates and prove once again that exercise can be fun! The students set realistic lap goals based on age and developmental ability, and then enjoy themselves as they strive for their personal "best distance" at the Walkathon. All you need to do to support your school is help the kids gather pledges.  The kids have a blast walking to the latest tunes (compliments of our awesome DJ...Alan!!)  while raising money for their school.

This is a fun event for the parent volunteers too, and a great way to meet other parents.  Come help us stamp lap cards, pour lemonade, and encourage the kids.  It's a wonderful opportunity to get your volunteer hours in early and watch your children have a great time as they walk around the field.

This year, we'd like to raise $40,000 for our school. We hope each family will participate in the Walkathon to the best of their abilities -- every little bit helps!
More information will be provided soon!

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Deb Glazer (debglazer@gmail.com).

Thank you very much for your help!
From the Scrip Table
by Leslie Cary scrip@thorntoncreek.org

Volunteers needed!
Do you drop off or pick up your child at least one day per week? Do you have a few extra minutes to volunteer at that time? Working at the scrip table is a great way to get in your volunteer hours, and see lots of other friendly faces in our community! It only takes about 30-45min of your time. The more we have the table staffed, the more scrip we can sell!

What is scrip?
Scrip are gift cards to the stores where you normally shop. You purchase them at face value, and the Thornton Creek Parent Group keeps a percentage of the sales. It doesn't cost you anything except some advance planning! We hope to have the scrip table staffed before & after school each day. Scrip can also be purchased online (scripzone.com, group ID is 206TCPG). Scrip cards stocked at the table include: Starbucks, PCC, QFC/Fred Meyer, Metropolitan Market, Safeway, Whole Foods, Top Pot Donuts, and several others.

If you would like more information about volunteering or purchasing scrip cards, please contact Leslie Cary at scrip@thorntoncreek.org.
